    Towing question???

I did a search but found nothing.
    Maybe a silly question.
Do you put your boat in gear to tow?

    Thanks,

I caravan with other boats going to tournaments and have yet to see a prop turning. None of us put them in gear.

Mixed schools of thought on this topic....

Since you're not supposed to shift the engine when it's not running, the (correct) answer would be NO, do not place the engine in gear when towing.

The primary reason placing in gear was considered (in years gone by) was that if the prop was to spin for long periods of time while trailering, the gearcase "could" overheat. Very unlikely in most bassboat applications (given position of engine/prop, high-performance gearlube, etc).

My Optimax manual says to put it in gear when towing, but I do not. No need, as the hull of a bassboat blocks too much wind for the prop to turn.

Now, I have seen saltwater boats and soem john boats going down the road with the props spinning, but usually on smaller motors that are not trimmed up and whose props are directly in the airflow under the hull.

If you have a concern about your prop spinning during towing a simple Bungee cord around the L/Unit and one blade will fix that problem.

Or, a nice looking prop cover (they don't spin too well when air can't pass through the blades).

Thanks again for the compliments, yes, there's no such thing as to much BLING-BLING......LOL. The OffShore mid mod on the lower unit does make a "BIG" statement when you fire it up. The only down side to this motor is that it's very thirsty, but hey, ya wanna play - ya gotta pay.....
