blew my 04 250 hpdi powerhead in the first 30 hours of operation. They replaced it and now I have over 300 hrs. with trouble free operation. Just recently needed to add a 10 micron filter since the ethanol issues. Now back to normal again. I run it on a skeeter 2050 multispecies.
I blew mine spring 07, but the reason it happened was in the fall of 06 the hose to the water pressure gauge came off my motor block and sucked water into the intake.
My 07 250 HPDI blew with 170 hours on it. Burned up a cylinder, I can't remember which one it was
count me in 01 150 large hole in the side of the block. trashed it.
I did !! A 2005 250 HPDI with 15 hrs. on it..............
The power head was replaced and the motor now has around 200 hrs or so, a phase III kit, and it has run pretty good ever since.
Mine blew at 52 hrs.Are you trying to decide on a motor based on how many have blown ?

Just looking into which years and HP are more prone to it. I had a '06 175HPDI with 420 hrs and never a single problem. I have a '07 225HPDI now with 100 hours and it has 2 years warranty left. Just trying to gauge whether to well it and get a series 2.

I hear ya.I would really look into the new SHO motors coming out,but maybe wait and see after they are out for a year at least.

I would love to have a SHO to replace the HPDI. No issues with mine so far with over 80hrs on it this year. I'll wait until the warranty is about up. Bugs should be worked out of the SHO and no telling what else will be out on the market.
A bud of mine blew his 05 225 with just over 80 hours on it. Yamaha replaced the power head with a new Series II.
2003 250 HPDI VMAX dropped #2 cilender cylinder around 36 hours, replace then put over 200 trouble free hours, then down sized to 2005 150 VMAX Carb for a few years with NO trouble, now run a 2008 250 HPDI VMAX Series II, 200 ish hours and all have been trouble free

04 250 hpdi # 2 blew at 298 hours.yamaha put on new power head and no problems so far
Yamaha is not making the HPDI any longer. They have a ton of left over inventory but are not producing anymore. The SHO is what they are replacing it with.

Why do people keep saying they are not building the HPDI anymore? They are still building them and will keep building them for many years to come.

no they are not building them anymore not the 3.3 liters they will only have the 2.6 liters from here on out, although you will probably be able to still get 3.3's for another year
as long as you have had all the updates and latest oil pump upgrades you are probably alright? there were never problems with the 2.6 liter hpdi's these engines are bullet proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!! only problem's were with 03-07 range 3.3's and alot of these problem's were dealer problem's " incorrect initial engine set-up and prep" make sure you have the latest oil pump update and tps set-up procedure
05 300 hpdi 70 hrs gasket went out on intake and blew,Buck's Island in Gadsden installed new powerhead and left gasket out somewhere and blew again. They installed another powerhead and same happened again.Yamaha sent tech to dealer to teach them how to install a powerhead and it lasted to 260 hrs and found one cylinder down to 90 psi.took over 2 months to get Yamaha to authorize another powerhead.Running strong now and almost out of warranty
2007 250 HPDI with 200 hours. Had a new power head installed under warranty, currently 20 hours on the new power head.
have grady white with two 300 hpdi's. worked great until upgrade on oil pumps.
2004 models worked fantastic for 4 years until upgrade. both engines blew.
bill was 8,000.00 but only had to pay 2,000.00. that was for each engine. i wish i had the new 300 four strokes that are coming out soon. lost confidence in these engines.
