I've been told wool as the baselayer is the best thing. Then something loose like a fleece over top. I balked at the REI pries of SmartWool at around $100. Found some more reasonably priced options at BackCountry.com.

Take a look at the BCG (store brand for Academy). I have their base layer winter weight and I use it when I walk. Nine degrees the other day when I walked and I was comfortable. They also carry double and triple XL sizes.

This thread is like 10 years old haha.

I have under armor and some moreno wool leggins. I prefer the wool. They are warmer and more comfortable. I still use the under armor on occassion though, mostly when upland hunting or being very active. i have also double layered them when going to sit still in sub 0 weather.

Thats Polartec. You guys need to go to their website and look at all the expensive companies they supply. Polartec also makes the special forces under clothing and jackets. Ive used the stuff for years now and it will keep you warm ice fishing, or 35 degrees and running 70 mph on a Harley.

Ten years?? You guys got me again. lol

Heavyweight Cabela's base layer tops and bottom does the job for me and you can always get it on sale at Cabela's for less than half the price of the Under Armor. Layer up and have wind-blocking outerwear and you are good to go. And I often fish in temps in the 30s with no problems.

I love my UA cold gear. It is the bst base layer when it is cold. I bought mine on sale and it was less than $30 per piece.

When a very old thread like this, on a not-so-common topic, is unearthed, I always wonder what led the archaeologist to dig it up and how many other threads on the subject he passed over during his search, before deciding to reply to the guy from nearly a decade ago. There’s a mystery!
