I saw an add for the 350 horsepower V-8 Four Stroke. Is anyone considering testing this on a Bass Boat?????? I would love to see a review. All I know is that it would make your nose sit high and give you some SPEED.

Yamaha currently builds an F225 in a 20 inch shaft length. The 250 HP and up fourstroke outboards are marketed primarily for offshore boats.

Actually on a bass boat I would be willing to bet the 300 Vmax HPDI would be faster considering it is MUCH lighter and it has a 20 in shaft AND a much "faster" lower-unit design. That V8 although is cool it won't be at home on a bass-boat at all IMO. Handeling would be horrible because of the factors mentioned earlier.
Now an off-shore or perhaps a BIG walleye rig would be another story.
The F225 runs very close to the 225 HPDI.

I think OMC made a V8 300hp outboard back in the 80's. I was too young to remember the details about it. Only that it was huge!
They did and it was huge. A dude here has one on the back of an old Champion and its a monster!

The 300hp 4.0L V8 OMC was discontinued after 1995. It was huge but it is lighter than the 2.6L (225-300) Verado (by quite a bit, 550 lbs vs 635) and MUCH lighter than the new Yamaha V8 (800+ lbs). In fact it was only about 20 lbs heavier than the 3.3L HPDI's.
The new V8 Yammie weighs as much as my Allison XB2002!
At 804 lbs or 822 lbs, the new F350 won't make it's way onto many smaller boats. I'm not real familiar with bass boats, but I don't know of any that are rated for 350 hp, let alone 804 lbs hanging on the transom.
We'll be seeing the big Contenders, Intrepids, and Yellowfins with 3 of these monsters hanging off them soon.

604 lbs? Try 804lbs
Boats over 20ft have no coastgaurd maximum HP rating...

Not all boats over 20 ft have unlimited HP rating. Take this from Ranger, Triton, Skeeter, Champion, Nitro, and many others. But I really doubt boat like Bullet or Blazer with unlimited HP rating can handle this 804 lbs motor on the back on a jackplate! I think it is time for the manufacturers to put placards to limit weight on the transom to prevent someone mounting this F350 on their boats.
I can imagine Ranger Z22 or Trition TR-22 or Champion 223 Elite can handle F350 (with 20" shaft), if not for 300hp max limit with small jackplate. The lower unit probably is ok on these boats, since even with 350 hp, they probably won't break 80mph (the thershold of needing a nosecone).

The coatgaurd has unlimited HP rating on boats over 20ft.... While the manufacture may have a "reccomended" maximum HP rating on their hull and not warranty anything bigger.... The coastgaurd is the boss. Insuring it may also be a glitch.

Mike is right. However arguing that point with the marine police or insurance company is another story. They typically go by what the manufacture puts on the plate. If you can get them to change it you are ok.

Yeah, I fixed that, thinking of something else when I was typing. Some of the bass boats may handle the power, but not the weight. They are nearly double the weight of a 2 stroke.

Sure the 350 V8 is heavy, but the other 4 strokes are not twice the weight of the 2 strokes.

Years ago OMC actually made a 425 hp V8 that turned up to 9000 rpm extremely short shaft. Was a beast just to look at and believe it was less than 500#. A guy on TB has a 300 hp Rude V8 on a drag boat. Think there will be a 400 hp Yammie in the near future. TBJ
800lb motor would sink most fishing boats.......but someone will try it....

If anyone wanted to get an idea. Just walk to the back of your boat with no one in the front and stand on the transom. that should give you an idea of what it would be like with 800lbs hanging on the back. Mine weighs just under 500. I'm just over 300. when I walk to the back water seeps into the splash well just a little. I imagine if it already had 800 lbs back there. I could never walk to the back of my boat and the bilge pump would be running a lot.
