Set up of new yamaha f150 on triton tr186

My fishing partner is picking up his 99 Triton TR186 tmrw fitted with a new Yamaha F150 4 stroke. Had Mercury 150 with a 25p 4 blade on it. I think it was a Quicksilver. The people installing the motor is telling him the prop is too much for the Yamaha. Will not allow the motor to accelerate to 6000 rpms as it needs to. They are loaning him a 22p aluminum prop for the break-in period. I have a 3 blade 25p on my 150 Merc. Does any one have any insight on this. Does anyone think the 3 blade 25p will work ok or any ideas?
    thanks, gene

Under normal fishing or running conditions, you should be running at or near your motors max rpm's(with in couple hundred rpm's of max) Any less, your lugging the motor, this is for a 2-stroke. The 4-stroke will run a wider rpm range. If you can't reach max rpm's, then drop the prop pitch 1 inch. You will lose about 150 rpm's per inch.

Yamaha tested it with a 21" prop. on a TR 185 so its probably about right. They want the rpms near 6000 on the 4 strokes. 25" will be to big.

Thanks to 931Fishead for posting starting this post while I was out of town. Also, thanks for the responses thus far.....

I did check the Yamaha Performance Report and saw it was tested with a TR-185 and a 14 1/2 x 21P prop.

I also called Triton and they told me that the 185 has the same hull and weight as my 186....and since they did not have much data on the Yamaha's they suggested I call Yamaha....Yamaha suggested I call a local dealer.....local dealer suggested I call Yamaha....and around and around we go!!!

Still have novice questions regarding my rig....like, What would be the optimum (or best all around) set up for this rig? (it has a 6" manual jack plate on it now) for instance, ...distance from pad to prop shaft center....and 14 1/2 x 21P vs 14 1/2 x 23P vs smaller or larger diameters???

Also...what about prop brands? does it make a difference?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Start it at 3 1/2" under pad. You are going to have to move it because every boat setup is different depending on your fishing load. Get the motor broken in and then start moving the motor up or down. You may be able to turn a 23 with the 2.0 gears and a jack plate. It depends on how many rpms you can get it to turn the 22". You'll lose 200 rpms going to a SS then 200 more going to a 23" so its hard to tell where to set it and be right.

Old thread but I have a 186 just upgraded to a 2021 F150. I using a Solas Lexor 21 can get 5500 RPMS at 55..went to a 19 and could get 5800 but only 53.5. What do I have to do to get 6k and decent speed?
