Other 14 inch tire options with Load range "D" , speed rated to 100+ mph, accept up to 65lbs air pressure; These are like an 80 series and 195's are the similar diameter of the ST 205 series Marathons and other ST trailer tires.... And the 205 Kumho 857 are similar diameter as the ST 215 Marathons and other ST trailer tires.

    Trailer tire balancing...

I recommend that everybody add up their rigs total weight...

Boat, motor, trailer, batteries, charger, gas, spare tire, anchors, spare prop, trolling motor, tackle, etc and make sure the tires that they buy are up for the job and have a 20% cushion... Many people forget to add the weight of their trailer, but the tires also carry that load as well.

Many times trailers are rigged with bare min suspension and tires and this can cause many problems as the tires show age... Max inflation also helps the tires run cooler and helps prevent sidewall failure.

This is a good reason to use a load range "D" tire so your not at risk with the load we all carry.

Don't forget to use RV or high pressure valve stems for the load range D tires, and have them balanced.

I had a trailer tire blow yesterday after running it for less than one year. PSI was 50 and no visible problems beforehand. Any ideas or just defective tire. It wasn't a big brand tire made in China. Maybe that was the problem?

    Thanks

I think radials are a better choice for softer ride for the boat, and longer life on the road.

I went with the Hankook radials Mike recommend and could not be happier. They tow a hundred times better then my old bias ply tires.

So Mike...Just had a Marathon just about blow with a huge bulge in the tread. It is a 215 R75 14. Would the Kumho 857 205 14 be the right size?

    Hey guys,

I have to buy new tires for a 2006 EZ Loader for a 19'3" boat. The original sized 215 75 R15 tires are not available through most manufacturers anymore. Goodyear Marathons (original and I like them) are now made in a 225 or 205. The 225 is .6" higher and the 205 is .6" lower. I would buy the 225 if I knew there was no clearance issue, but am concerned about that. I also don't want to sacrifice my towing ability or smoother ride on long trips with the 205. Anyone have an experience having to change their tire size recently? Any recommendations?

    1. Determining the weight of your rig is a little complicated. What you really need to know is the weight that the tires are supporting. If you weigh the loaded trailer while hitched to a tow vehicle, you will get the weight the tires are supporting. If you weigh the loaded rig while unhitched and on the tongue jack, you are including the tongue weight that is normally supported by the tow vehicle so you need to subtract 10% of the scale reading. Having the rig loaded with gear, fuel and anything else you normally haul is important.

Some manufacturers recommend that the combined capacity of all of the tires should exceed the loaded trailer weight by 20 percent. That's what I used in the above table. Your tolerance for risk may be higher. I think you can be pretty confident if your rig, loaded for fishing, scales less than the numbers in the appropriate column on the right you are in pretty good shape with that tire.

These weights all assume maximum trailer tire pressure.

    2. Calculated. They didn't publish this data.

    3. Goodyear has published a bulletin regarding high speed operation of Marathon tires. In short, if your rims and valve stems can handle it, you can increase the pressure by 10psi if you need to operate at speeds up to 75MPH. http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires...plications.pdf

    4. I was unable to find the speed rating for these tires. Industry standard is 65MPH, so assume so unless reliable information shows otherwise.

    5. This tire is available in both Load Range C and Load Range D in the 205/75R14 size.

Note that some of these tires are available in lighter capacity tires with the same name. Maxxis especially! Be sure of what you are getting if you order tires.

This is the result of my own search for tires. I went with the good ones I found, and I added a few that other people here have talked about for comparison. Don't trust my information without checking for yourself. I've been known to do stupid things and make typos. More often than I'd like. If you find an error or you know of another tire that could or should be included, let me know and I'll add it to the table.

The scariest takeaway from the chart is that with a tandem you can hardly go wrong, but with a single you can hardly go right.

The "Maximum Rig Weight" Column gives the most your rig can weigh when scaled with just the trailer tires on the scale while the trailer is hitched to the tow vehicle. This gives you the weight on the trailer tires. That includes outboard, trailer, batteries, tackle, fuel, cooler and everything else, including that box of Twinkies in the rod locker. This takes the 20% cushion into account as well as the number of tires.

The "Max Speed" is the manufacturer's maximum speed rating for this tire. If you go faster, you lose load capacity. How much you lose I can't tell you, but if you are close to the weight limit, you'd better watch the speed rating.

I registered here to thank you for the research.
I have a flats boat weighing in at3,600 on the scale. The 1760 tires just don't hold up.Always properly inflated.
Ordered some Kenda Karriers and am hoping for two years of trailering w/ no issues.
if they blow out or lose a belt, I'll be moving up to 15s.
    Thanks.

If I was building a new trailer and went with a single axle trailer. I would go with a LT tire like these. They have the speed rating and load rating plus they will outlast any trailer tire and give you a great ride.
By far the best tires I've ever used on my truck and there is no reason it wouldn't be great for trailers. I'm so over trailer tires there all crap!

Those don't have the load rating. In 15", which is bigger than most trailers use, those tires are only rated at 1763lbs.
