I have a Humminbrd 898 side imaging and a 858 downimaging unit. I understand that you can marry the units via an ethernet cable. Some people have told me not to do this. They say I will have nothing but trouble. Anyone have any experience? Also, if you connect the two units with the ethernet cable and you mark a waypoint on the side imaging unit will it be saved on the down imaging unit? And finally if the connection is made, is it complicated to operate? I'm almost exclusively a crappie fishermen and I am learning to use the side imaging to find structure and then go fish it with the down imaging unit on the bow of the boat.

They are probably thinking about interlink which was plagued by problems. Ethernet is plug and play for the most part. Waypoints are shared not transfered between units. This a video that Doug did on Ethernet and I think it explains most of what you need to know.

I was giving vertical fishng a go today using both the 1158 and 1198. In the attachment for vertical fishing it mentioned to use "dual beam" for the transducer selection on the 1198.. I think I figured out what to use on the 1158, but, wanted to confirm.. Which transducer selection is best for vertical fishing on the 1158?

I think 200 kHz is best for vertical fishing once you are on the fish. Use SI to locate what you think are fish worth looking at, use 83/200 with Fish ID turned on to zero in on the fish. The orange fish ID symbols indicate fish in the 200 cone while blue fish ID symbols indicate fish in the 3x wider 83 cone. Then use 200 only to stay on top of the orange fish. The 200 will only show you fish that are, essentially, immediately below your trolling motor which is where your spoon or dropshot will be.

A lot of the links got broken with the server problem a while back .... Doug has been working to fix them, but I don't see any way they can all be fixed.
