How hard is it to replace the Drive Shaft (BNT3963)?
Lets just say I was a little clumsy and stepped on it lying on my deck and snapped handle off ... broke the drive shaft where the handle mounts. DUH

i can tell you as soon as my new one arrives... the threads that hold the handle nut on stripped on mine...
There are two small screws that attach the shaft assy. to the frame.
Pull the main gear off to expose hidden screws.
During reassembly do not force any threaded screws or nuts.
Cross threading will cause issues.
did it today was a piece of cake
2 screws and a c-clip harder than just taking off the handle sideplate...

Shimano has used different materials for nuts on their shafts.
I have found a plastic nut on bottom portion of shaft and aluminum for attaching handle.
I have replaced all those with brass ones from older Curado 100B / 200B models
The other materials IMO were done to cut weight.
Make sure the two wavy washer are in opposing position () and the coated side of other washer facing drag star.
Here is how I pull side cover off with lest amount of hassle.
Step 1 remove spool from frame to release clip holding at side cover bearing.
Step 2 expose handle nut and remove it straddle handle with two fingers.
This will prevent losing drag clicker which sits under the washer.
Set this aside
Remove drag spring then the nut.
There will be a keyed bushing two wavy washers and a teflon coated brass one
Step 3 Loosen all side cover screws then pull cover off in one piece
There are two little springs sitting on posts by pinion on a saddle either set them aside or be careful not to loose them.
Step 4 Pull the main gear off to expose hidden screws.
Reverse order to reassemble.
Go to Shimano site a print schematic for reel your repairing

i cross threaded when putting the handle nut on after some maint...
There are times that it has taken me a couple try's reinstalling that nut.
I use the two finger straddle since the whole assy under the handle is being pushed out by the drag spring under drag star.
With handle pressed in I make sure the nut is perfectly square to handle shank.
... you can also try spinning the nut counter clockwise, to get it seated on the shaft, before starting to actually tighten it down.
Good Idea but there are left hand threaded nuts and right hand threaded nuts used by Shimano.
Thanks for all the tips ... Wouldn't say it was a piece of cake for me personally ... But wasn't that bad if you take your time.

that's an aluminum nut, not PLASTIC, and yes, the new material is a weight/cost change. They will break if stepped on.

Upon further examination those drag nuts are made of aluminum.

Not to beat a dead horse... But Im trying to remove the drive shaft off an Old Scorpion 100 DC. Removed the two screws holding it onto the frame and still doesn't budge. Any ideas? IMG_28112021_191247_(400_x_600_pixel).jpg
