    Lower unit (metal flakes)

    Pulled the plug on my lower unit today and the oil was black and had metal flakes on the lower mag plug, my question is do I refill it and keep on going or do i take it in to have it looked at. the lower unit was replace last year in the spring. Thanks!

    New unit last year and the fluid hasn't been changed???? Gear lube should ALWAYS be changed on a new or rebuilt gearcase at a maximum of 20 hours.

    It's not uncommon to see small, "dustlike" metallic particles at the drain plug after gearcase breakin (or even during normal operation of a used gearcase).

    Metal Fragments, or "shards" are a completely different story, as this can be an indication of failing components.
