3.0l Optimax won't go in gear when cold

After an eigthy mile tow in 30 degree F my 2008 Optimax 200 (purchased new this year) would not go into gear after launching. My nephew was at the ramp and said to let the motor warm up and it will shift normally. His 2006 Opti 200 has been doing the same thing since new. I've owned several 2.0L and 2.5L carbed and EFI Mercs and none operated in this manner. Is this normal to 3.0/Optis?

It is a good idea to allow the engine to warm up... shifting CAN be slightly more difficult during VERY cold operation.

However.... I would suggest that the shift cables, and the SHIFT RELAY ARM (runs from the cable attachment point to the shift shaft under the powerhead) be checked. If the shift relay arm is bent, it will RUB against the lower cowling, causing excessively hard or difficult shifting (especially when cold).

This arm is usually bent by attempts to shift the engine when it is NOT RUNNING (not a good idea).

Wouldn't this cause difficult shifting warm or cold?
I can see no evidence of rubbing aginst the lower cowling.
My motor has never been shifted into gear, since purchased, when not running.

Both motors shift fine after approximatly one minute of idling.

It may be that you simply need to allow for at least a short warm-up period before attempting shifting (especially in sub-40 degree F temps).
