Post "BATTERIES THAT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS"- Updated 12/23/22

    Ok guys:

*** IMPORTANT NOTE: In a fishing application, DO NOT attempt to use the "minimum" specification as your cranking battery!!! You must add capacity for every electrical device in or attached to your boat!

MANY thanks to CatFan for his HARD work compliling an updated list of Batteries with current batteries (including options for most any Mercury Outboard engine).

975+ CCA (975 CCA or higher) is strongly recommended for 150 or Higher 4-Strokes.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE- 12/23/2022:

As of 12/23/2022, Mercury has issued Service Bulletin 2022-19 and SHS 2022-21 stating that the listed engines will be permitted to use a Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery that is designed for engine cranking, as long as it meets the listed specifications:

-2.1L 75-115hp Fourstroke, ProXS and SeaPro Models
-3.0L 150hp Fourstroke, ProXS and SeaPro
    -4.6L V8 and 3.4L V6 175-300hp Fourstroke, ProXS, SeaPro and Verado Models
    -2.6L L6 200-400 Pro and Verado Models
    -7.6L V12 500-600hp SeaPro and Verado Models.
-ALL MERCURY RACING OUTBOARD ENGINES (Current Production models)
-NO other engines approved at this time.

    Minimum Specs Required:

-Chemistry/Format: Lithium IRON Phosphate designed for MARINE CRANKING USE.
    -Minimum Cranking Amps: 800A for 8 second minimum @ 20 Degrees F
-Peak Charge Acceptance: 165A at 20-130 degrees F for one minute
-Max Charge Alternator Size: 150A at 20-130 degrees F
    -Max Charge Voltage/Alternator Output: 14.8V
    -Reserve Capacity (RC25 @ 80F): 135 Minutes
-Ingress Protection (IP rating): IP67 or greater.

Cautions that use at temperatures below 32F may require additional equipment such as a battery heater.

Bulletin also lists a Relion Battery that has been evaluated and meets the above requirements: RB100-HP.

    IMPORTANT NOTE
    :

STRONGLY RECOMMEND the installation of a CLAMP-STYLE battery terminal on most of these batteries. This gives you a THREADED connection, that is CLAMPED to the largest/strongest connection point the battery has to offer (and often prevents MANY problems that can creep up down the road).

    Example:

Make ALL connections to the terminal as described below:

Battery terminal connections should be installed ENGINE CABLE FIRST, remaining lugs "Largest to Smallest", and finish off the connection with a Stainless Locknut (do NOT use wing-nuts).

BEFORE INSTALLING A NYLOCK NUT ON A BATTERY TERMINAL
    :
IT SHOULD BE PRE-THREADED ONTO A SUITABLE BOLT FULLY, AND REMOVED FROM THE BOLT (to ensure nylock is pre-threaded, and no abnormalities exist in the nut).

Failure to follow this step MAY result in damage to the threaded terminals inside the battery
(and subsequent intermittent or total failure of the battery to charge or perform properly).

Updated July 7, 2020 with Additional Battery Info.

MANY thanks to CatFan for his HARD WORK compliling these battery lists with updated/current information!

    THREAD UPDATED 4/23/2021.

Approximately 30 pages of outdated posts and information have been removed, essentially posts from 6/2008 - 6/2018. This was simply in an effort to reduce the amount of reading to what might actually be available for consumers "today".

All current-model and current-list material has been retained.

I get what you are saying but...…………….Don has stated ONE start battery numerous times, which leads one to believe that he was given this information during TECHNICAL TRAINING with MERCURY. I doubt that Don would just make up the ONE start battery fact, if it was not true.

Just spoke with Mercury and they dont have an issue with 12 volt parallel. There is really nothing different just more storage. But be sure to keep them charged in full before every outing otherwise you can tax your alternator and charging system. As long as you are fully charged both batteries before each use, you should be fine. But please call to confirm, call Mercury. They are ready and willing to answer this question. It would be good to see if you got the same answer as i did.

[QUOTE=Ed R]I have yet to find in writing from/by Mercury, that Mercury specifically does not recommend using two (2) batteries in parallel. All I can find is... "Do not use deep cycle batteries." "Engines must use a marine starting battery with 1000MCA, 800 CCA or 180Ah."

    Tom & Ed:

This subject has been brought up and beat to death over and over. Here's the "skinny" on the situation:

    1. Alternator. It was designed to Maintain the Fully-Charged state of ONE Properly Rated, Fully Charged Battery. Not two, three, four, or six.

    2. Parallel banks: Theoretically, a Parallel bank can produce a SUBSTANTIALLY higher capacity than a single battery. HOWEVER- this assumes that the health and charge of BOTH batteries remains "identical". If one battery becomes even slightly less healthy, it begins to sap the "good" battery and also overloads the charging system.

Mercury offers Battery Isolator Kits that "permit" the use of multiple batteries. That is intended to be accomplished by isolating the second battery with an isolator.

The answer you get when you post questions to Mercury will depend on who you speak with. I can assure you that the answer coming from Mercury's University division isn't recommending running multiple-parallel batteries.

And I'll go so far as to say that Product Integration and Engineering would probably give an answer very similar to this one.

    Let's move along....

can you post links to Mercury recommendations or best practice data, or is this all verbal in class/training?

Post #1 contains the recommendations (it has been updated with some new batteries/info since original publish date, of course).

Much of the information can be gleaned from a combination of Service Manuals, Owner's Manuals, and Technician Training notes (that last one isn't something everyone will have, of course).

Thanks Don. I've seen more and more pros with dual cranking batteries in parallel in their "walkthroughs." Are they running isolator kits then, or just ignoring the recommendation due to the limited time they run their boats and aren't concerned with alternator workload they are putting on their boats (or any other reason Mercury has, just using ur post above as example).

Just to play devil's advocate Don ( because I find this topic interesting ), if you have two healthy batteries in parallel, there should be no issue at all provided both batteries are healthy and charged. At the same time, if one battery were in bad shape or shorted for any reason, your mercury monitor would quickly let you know. Why would this be an issue? it would be no different that a bad cell in my one battery, the same thing would happen.

Mermonitor can NOT tell if there is an issue with ONE of two start batterires connected in parallel.

As Savage stated. your MercMonitor is NOT capable of telling you that you have a bad battery. It is ONLY capable of reporting the LESSER of MPR Voltage or PCM Wake Power Voltage, AND Engine Faults.

And one bad battery in a "parallel bank" doesn't act just like a single battery. It depletes the GOOD battery, and overloads the charging system with a much higher demand cycle than normal.

No need to continue beating the topic to death- the recommendation stands. We understand that you'll run what you want.

Hey no issues at all. Just thinking outloud. Thanks for your help and this great website. It has saved my bacon many times! Funny thing is that I came across this website so many times in the past but never dug in before I bought the merc and Champion combo last year and someone recommended this site. Great resource for sure. Thank you both.

    Don,

I got caught out on Lake Erie yesterday and noticed my engine was having trouble starting. Merc Smart Craft showed 14.1 while running but when I started you seen it drop down to 11.6. I then ran back near ramp and fished out day.

Battery that is installed is Deka Marine Master 24M7 unfortunately I have no room to upgrade in my Crestliner PT20 with 3 trolling motor 27's, 1 Power Pole, Charger there is not any more room for a larger cranking battery.

I just installed Lowrance 3D, Hydrowave plus have two HDS Carbon 9's and one power pole with airrator running all day I can see where I am having some issues.

The Deka Marine Master is just 13 months old.

So what options do I have with a 24 size battery? Does a 34M offer me anymore capacity?

I been looking at Cabelas x-900 or Battery Plus X2? Any other option?

Do you charge it every time before you go out? Also that is one of the largest capacity batteries out there. Could it be that it was a lemon and the next one will do better. It shouldn't drop down to 11.6 unless you have a number of heavy electronics running at once like your tilt, power pole, etc.. My alarm will go off if I run my trim and tilt and hydraulic jack at the same time for more than 5 seconds during idle speed. I think you have a bad battery.

Yes I do charge every time I was on the water.

When I got home yesterday I pulled it out of boat, I haven't charged it yet and it measured 12.7v but when engine started yesterday it was dropping to 11.6.

I will give me dealer a call today as well.

You mean the voltage is dropping while cranking or when the engine is running?

You should always charge the battery as soon as possible after fishing. Even a one day delay is very hard on a battery.

The voltage should suffer when starting the motor. that is a huge load on the battery. Not sure to what extent but I am wondering if you have a different problem than the battery.

Voltage drop when cranking. Showing 14.1 when running. Batteries are charged the day it comes off the water.

11.6 while starter is cranking isn't really bad- that's a heavy load.

Make sure your connections are solid- if possible use CLAMP on terminals, then use the stud on that terminal to connect cable lugs.

ENGINE CABLE FIRST, remaining ones Largest to Smallest, and finish off with a Stainless Nylock (pre-thread on a bolt FIRST).
