    Oil tank

I have a 1998 Mercury Mariner 225 . I get a oil alarm but the tank on the motor is full . When I remove the wired sensor from the tank the alarm goes away . How do I fix this problem . I had to install a new tank two years ago . Thanks in advance

I installed a new tank 2 years ago . So why would the alarm stop when I pull the sensor out.

Because either the level in the tank is low, OR the float in the tank is hung at a low level position.

If you bypassed the sensor in the tank, and the alarm stops, then the tank wasn't completely full, or the tank sensor (tank) is defective. Its really that simple.

    ^^^^

And if it was one of the cheap-o aftermarket tanks... that's real common.

It was a mercury tank ordered from Mercury

If the sensor is not seeing something in the tank and alarms , why would it stop alarming out of the tank because it is still not seeing anything ?

The sensor doesn't have the ability to be "seeing" anything. Think of the sensor as a switch. The "switch" is off (open) when the tank is not completely full. The "switch" is on (closed) when the tank is completely full.

Tank is completely full and the sensor floated up as the oil rose . I let the tank over fill a bit and put the lid on . I still get a oil alarm . When I remove the sensor on the outside of the tank the alarm stops . So you think it is the sensor in the tank?

    Part Number?

It's possible the magnet is missing from the float or is in the wrong position on the float.
