    Plastic Covers on Lower Unit

I made a 113 mile trip across Erie with my 250 ProXS and destroyed both little plastic covers that mount over the lower motor mounts.

    1. Are these covers really needed?

    2. Is there a way to keep them from blowing apart?

    3. Can I buy them in bulk??

Re: Plastic Covers on Lower Unit (sethv)

They will come off in most cases it is caused by rough water or high speeds..
I heard that Mercury is suppose to come out it a replacement.. It is suppose to have two screws instead of one holding it on..

Re: Plastic Covers on Lower Unit (carolina killer)

Terry's right- it's fairly common to see these "blown off" under some high-speed or rought water conditions.

These covers are essentially just that- a cosmetic cover for the lower engine mounts.

They are relatively inexpensive, and very easy to replace.

We recommend a "silver dollar sized application of Ultra Black Silicone" be applied to the back side of the cover (in the center) before reinstalling. This helps to cut down on vibration, and may also help prevent them "blowing off" in some cases.

    Part# 8M0001136 Cover $12.19
    Part# 69079 Screw $ 0.56

Should these covers be replaced under warranty? Seems lousy that Merc has such a whimpy design that they break and expect the customer to pay for replacement.

Any risk of damage if I just leave them off?

If the engine is under warranty, they should be covered (barring external "striking" forces causing them damage).

I'd have them replaced... if for no other reason than "the engineers deemed them necessary".

In future open a new topic for your engine. As to where, any Mercury dealer.
