    Tire pressure question for trailer

I have a 2015 ranger trail with general tire Altimax rt43 on it. On the sidewall of the tire it says Max PSI is 44LBS. Right now I have them inflated to 40PSI. Do I need to go all the way to the max or is 40 fine. I figure it will increase a bit once I start on my 6 hour journey.

    Thanks

The max pressure on the tire is COLD pressure, so it’s designed to raise a little more than the 44lbs. The rated load weight is at max pressure, so when you lower the pressure you lower the max load capacity. I always inflate mine to max pressure. Maybe if I was driving through the desert and the temps were 120 degrees I would lower them a little but for normal conditions I run max pressure. I believe it reduces sidewall flex and reduces heat.

basscat uses these tires and has posted that they inflate to max pressure on sideway stamping which is 44 in your case

The recommended tire pressure should noted on the trailer near the tongue. What does the factory tire pressure decal state?

Same tires on my Ranger and I run them at 44psi with no issue.

The tires the OP is asking about are passenger car tires so if the trailer manufacturer specs ST tires this won't apply.

I agree. With passenger car tires, I'd go with 35PSI. I have Cooper Radials on my tandem trailer and that's what I run them at and they work fine.

Are we talking single or dual axle? 35 is probably good with a tandem but I would max out if used on a single axle.
