Question on jumpy tach 175 Johnson

I just switched motors, 92 175 to a 2005 175 and installed a new OMC tach with the system check lights. First time out on the water at low rpm the tach is steady, at WOT the tach jumps around. I noticed that the pulse pointer on the back was not directly pointing at the no. 6. Would this cause the tach to be unsteady or is this an electical issue? Motor is a 2005 J175glsob. Thanks,

Possibly. Set the pointer correctly and try it again. Make sure your ground wires a tight at the battery also. You could also try reseating the 8 pin connector on the back of the gauge.
