Re: Installation Information Resource (Doug Vahrenberg)

How to Install Shoot-Thru (Epoxy In Hull) Transducer:

First: It is recommended to test the location prior to installation. Hull construction can have effects on getting good readings and it's best to find the best location. Air Pockets, Areas that Glass Matts Overlap, Delamination of Hull can effect the sonar performance. The best wasy is to disable automatic bilge pump temporarily and add a couple inches of water to the hull. Next build a small sand bag using a Ziploc bag. Place transducer in hull and using sand bag hold it down to find the best location for installation. Normally the closer to the rear of the boat and center of the boat the higher speed the sonar will stay locked on. Make sure the location is away from strakes underneath as these will cause aerated or turbulated water underneath and disrupt the clean water flow accross the bottom of the hull which can effect sonar readings.

Second: Mark the location of the best readings and drain the water and allow hull to dry. Hull must be dry for epoxy to adhere and set-up.

Third: I like to sand or smooth out area of hull the transducer is mounted so it's flat and smooth surface.

Fourth: Using Plumber's Putty or Play Do build a small dam around the Area the transducer will installed about an 1" wider than transducer to keep epoxy from flowing during installation.

Fifth: Use Slow Cure Epoxy - I recommend the epoxy that comes with the transducer direct from Humminbird. Slow Cure Epoxy stays cooler than fast cure. DO NOT use silicone or any other material than epoxy. Silicone can absorb sonar waves and creates alot of issues. Mix thoroughly until consist color. Avoid whipping while mixing to reduce creating air bubbles in the epoxy. The less air bubbles the better the final results and improved sonar readings.

Sixth: I like to apply a thin layer of epoxy on the transducer, I also like to apply a thin layer pressed into the bottom of the dam to squeeze out any potential air bubbles between epoxy and hull. Fill the rest of the dam with remaining epoxy.

Seventh: Installation of transducer. As you push transducer into the epoxy start 90° from foward and push and slowly turn the quarter turn. This will helps squeeze out air bubbles under the transducer.

Eighth: Using Sandbag from step one place on top of transducer to hold it in place. And allow the epoxy to cure for a minimum of 24 hours.

Ninth: Remove Sandbag and Plumbers Putty. Your Transducer is now installed and ready to use.

Tenth: Test Transducer in the Water to make sure you have good sonar readings. If not you may have air the epoxy and may need to repeat procedure to get good sonar readings.

Example of 2D Shoot Thru Transducer on my Skeeter FX20 (Transom to the right side)

This is the Schematic of how the AS SI DB Y Cable Splits the 2D out of the Standard Compact SI or HDSi Transducer to a second 2D only like XP 9 20 Transducer to get you 2D readings all the time and at all speeds, when mounting the SI transducer high on the transom or on jackplate.

    Wiring the Electronics

One of the greatest effects to electronics is insufficient elecrical supply. It can make electronics do weird operations and can create headaches for the operator. The best solution is to make sure you have a good power supply that is more than minimum needs for the graph.

There are four basic units of measurement for electricity:
    Power: measured in Watts
    Current: measured in Amps
    Voltage: measured in Volts
    Resistance: measured in Ohms
You can have proper voltage but reduced current and power. For proper operation you need Power, Current and Voltage with minimum resitance.

Excellent Read on Choosing Proper Wire: http://www.rowand.net/Shop/Tec...t.htm

    1) Always run direct to the battery (humminbird Recommended). Utilizing existing boat wiring harness can underpower the electronics. Not all boats are wired the same and wire gauge, connections and circuit protection may limit proper current flow to the unit.

    2) If you need to extend the wire use smaller gauge wire (Bigger thickness) for the longer you need to extend. 18 Gauge is minimum gauge but I prefer 14-16 gauge to provide ample capacity for years of trouble free service.

Check out this Voltage Drop Calculator: http://www.altronix.com/app_notes/calc.php

Choosing 14ga over 18 ga in a 20' Span reduces voltage drop approximately 2/3rds. That is why wire size and resistance free, corrosion free wire is important.

    3) A 3 Amp Fuse is recommended. I prefer Blade Type Automotive Fuses over Glass Bulb Fuses as they don't lose contact as easy. THe Spring Loaded Fuse Holders in Glass Bulb Fuses can disconnect in rough water shutting down the flow of electricity to the unit.

    Blade Style Fuse:

Blade Style Fuse Holder: (Available at Auto Parts Stores):

    4) All connections should be soldered. Using Butt Connector Splices is asking for trouble down the road. Easier for corrosion to enter connection. Improper splice can reduce electrical flow. Connections can vibrate and loosen wires in connector. Or Over crimping can damage wires. Solder Connection creates a better connection. All Connections should be heat shrink to reduce cane of corrosion from water or mositure intrusion.

    Ethernet Networking

Ethernet is a simple straight plug in solution. There are no extra boxes or power sources required. Ethernet allow users to share waypoints, routes, tracks and GPS position information. It DOES NOT SHARE MAPS. It will also allow users to share Sonar information.

GPS receivers and transducers are plugged into the units the same way they have been whether you use Ethernet or not. Ethernet is simply a separate cable that communicates information between two units.

The following 800,900 and 1100 series units are compatible with Ethernet: 858c, 898c SI, 958c, 998c SI, 1197c SI, 1198c SI.

Ethernet cables are available in 4 lengths:
    2 foot- AS EC 2E
    10 foot- AS EC 10E
    20 foot- AS EC 20 E
    30 foot- AS EC 30 E

There is also a 30 foot extension cable if more length is required:
    AS ECX 30 E
Also make sure both units have the correct software for Ethernet functionality

To Ethernet a 700 HD Series unit you will need to add an adapter on to the end of the standard Ethernet cables mentioned on the previous page. This cable is the AS EC QDE. It is shown below:

The 2011 Models 700 HD Series units that are compatible with Ethernet are 798ci SI HD, 788ci, 778c HD and 788ci HD DI. No other 700 series units are compatible with Ethernet. (Non-HD and Prior 2010 Models are not Ethernet Compatible)

If you wants to use a TS-W Speed Sensor (paddle wheel) or a separate Temp Sensor (TG-W) with a 700 HD Series unit that is connected via Ethernet you will have to use an adapter since the Temp/Speed plug on the back of the 700 HD Series unit has been replaced by the Ethernet connector. This adapter is AS SW Y and is shown below.

    -----

An explanation about the transferring of Sonar information

A unit can only receive Sonar information over the Ethernet that it is capable of using without Ethernet. By this I mean that for a unit to receive Side Imaging Sonar information over the Ethernet it must be a side imaging unit.

<u>2D sonar units will only receive 2D sonar over the Ethernet</u>
    Examples: 778c HD, 788ci HD, 858c,958c,1158c

<u>Side Imaging Units can receive 2D, DownImaging from Side Imaging and Side Imaging Sonar over Ethernet</u>
    Examples: 798ci SI, 898c SI, 998c SI, 1197c SI, 1198c SI

<u>DownImaging units can only receive 2D Sonar and DownImaging Sonar</u>
    Example: 788ci HD DI

(Down Imaging from Side Imaging) and (DownImaging) are two different technologies and aren’t compatible over Ethernet.

    Explanation
The DownImaging that comes from a Side Imaging Unit will not transfer via Ethernet to a DI unit. For example if I hook up a 1198 and 788ci HD DI unit the only information they can share is the 200kHz Downlooking sonar. No DownImaging information will be shared.

If I hook up a 1198 to a 798 they will share 200kHz downlooking, 83kHz downlooking, DownImaging from Side Imaging and Side Imaging Sonar.

    ----

#1- Ethernet and Interlink WILL NOT work at the same time. Whenever an Ethernet cable is hooked up to a unit the Interlink functionality is automatically disabled.

#2- Ethernet will not transfer other accessory information like Weathersense or XM NavWeather

#3- With Interlink we were using Y cables to allow you to plug in both Interlink and GPS. With Ethernet the GPS can be plugged directly into the back of the unit without a Y cable unless you need to connect another accessory like Weathersense or XM Nav Weather.

Transducer Shield and Saver: Spring Back Bracket

New Product from Transducer Shield and Saver: Spring Back Bracket

    http://www.transducershieldandsaver.com

FYI: This is a cool deal for those that want a better mount for a transom mount transducer for on-plane depth reading. It fits most transom brackets and has a spring return if it kicks up. For the plastic Humminbird transom bracket like the one for the Compact SI transducer, just add the lock-down scew to the HB mount and let the good one do the work if needed. It is not shown on the web site so you have to call to order it. It is the SBB-3 and the cost is $69.95

How to Rig Humminbird Transducer on MinnKota Terrova:

Republished from Terrova sonar transducer mount

Well, I mounted the shielded HDSI 180 T transducer to my Terrova today. Probably everybody does it this way but I took some pics. I had the cable dangling around like I saw someone mount it on a PD V2. Didn't work out for me. I think I'll like this much better. Had to remove the shaft with motor from the drive to avoid cutting the cable, but it's just one 3/16" screw. Pull two electrical quick disconnects and voila, it slips right outta' there.

When you get the cable just centered and tight, use a drop of waterproof glue every 6 to 8 inches to hold it there. There's plenty of clearance to slip through the drive. Put 'er back together. And take your time

    Minnkota PowerDrive V2 Install:

    From: Trolling motor transducer

It is easily done. Most folks attempt to tie wrap the wire to the shaft and that obviously won't work since the shaft must slide through the steering collar. The technique is shown in the pictures that follow. Basically you secure the cable at the motor end of the shaft. It must hang free as it parallels up the shaft and is then secured ABOVE the steering collar. It is then routed through the coil cord and on to the locator. There can be no twists or knots in the cord as it mast be free to pass through the coil cord as the motor is raised and lowerded.

    Step 1, 2, and 3

    Step 4 and 5

    Step 6 and 7

    Step 8

    From Crappie Forum:

Here is the way I mounted my V2:

    RipTide ST Transducer Install:

Here are a few pictures of a Humminbird transducer install on a Riptide ST (saltwater version of a Terrova). I used 5200 to glue the cable in the groove since I had some left over from other projects. The only drawback is it took a week for it to dry.

Several Questions on how there set-up is wired. These images will help identify AS-YC or AS SI DB Y Cable being used.

Look at the Cable Collector that holds all the individual Cables. Look at the Transducer Port do you have one cable or two coming from that port?

Here is 800/900 Series Cable Collector and Port Locations:

Since i run the 1100 Series here is the Cable COllector for it

The back of the Cable collector may have wiring like this. One Wire to Power, Comm Port could have Y Cable installed for GPS and Accessory like InterLink, Weathersense Etc and the Transducer Port has one wire transducer is connected direct. IF using AS SI DB Y Cable will have 2 Wires

800/900 will have same set-up just all in a line not in square cable collector

Here is a closer look at AS SI DB Y Cable removed from Cable Collector

Doug, Do you have a diagram showing a bow graph w side imaging, a console graph w side imaging transducer and shoot thru transducer and 360 imaging connected to both graphs and both graphs connect by ethernet. This may be an upcoming popular installation.

I don't have one but should be pretty simple because you hook up like normal then hook up to Ethernet with 5 Port Hub. 360 Imaging is an Ethernet Accessory.

Do you have the Ethernet Cable plugged into both? Try plugging and unplugging a couple times. Once you have connected the Network Menu should appear unless this is an older unit prior to the release of Ethernet and would need software update. Also is your software updates similar update versions?

Hi thanks for replying I wasn't thinking about a software update on the 998 it's a couple years old now the 958 is new, so I called a guy at a dealer and he said the Ethernet cable would not work and told me I had to buy the humminbird interlink to make it all work so I ordered it tonight before I read your post, did I make the wrong purchase thanks again
