The HB 597DI will do a creditable job of taking limited side images. I use it to look under bridge pilings, sunken bridges, around stumps, and other novel uses. The beam is much wider than the boat. I think the manual says it is as wide as the water depth, so in 20'FOW the beam will cover 20' of the bottom side to side. In reality it seems to do a little more than this.

Shown are screenshots of some sunken concrete bridges from Lake Palestine. Notice you can see the concrete pilings, concrete cross braces, and Crappie hiding under the cross braces. This information would not be seen on a conventional 2D Sonar.

Drive under a bridge and close to the pilings and you get a screenshot of the pilings, braces, and every Crappie hanging out around it.

The one I really like is the one of the sunken bridge taken from the side showing thousands of fish hiding under the roadway of the bridge. I'm sure one could get this from an expensive SI, but this is from a $600 HB597DI. Of course it also shows the fish lounging around on the deck.

I can drive close to a tree in the water and get a snapshot of the entire tree and every Crappie hanging out on it. They don't seem to mind having their picture taken.

Great stuff from an inexpensive unit. I now have two of these units on my pontoon boat.

Screen Shot of an old sunken tree with Crappie hanging out on it. I just drove by close to it and got a nice SI with

the HB597DI. Notice the fish laying on the bottom are almost not noticable in the 2D Sonar, but are very visible in the DI.
