    Gut Hook Removal

Hi guys, this is my annual spring posting of how to remove a gut hooked fish without a drop of blood, cutting off the hook or damaging the fish. I've used it with success every time I've had to use it and others have too.

It's amazing how easy and effective it works. Click here (and consider printing): http://www.walleyesunlimitedus...e.pdf

Once you do it a couple of times, you will be amazed at how fast you can get the hook out.

I look down the mouth to see which gill plate is best to work from then reach in with bent tip needle nose to catch the line. Pull the line out through the gill making sure to be beneath the "red stuff". Pull on the line to turn the hook then step on it to hold the hook in the turned position. All thats left to do after that is reach in and pull the hook out by the bend.

I always retie after this because the line could be roughed up by the needle nose or holding it with my foot.

I read this last year and ended up using this technique 3 or 4 times. I have to say it was very easy and I was pretty amazed at how well it worked. Hook pops right out with little effort and not a drop of blood.

Same here---I had just reviewed this tip the other day, then tried it for the first time---fish gobbled Down a 6" creature bait, only the head of the bait was visible.
Used this tip, then just lifted the hook/ bait right out---

Last summer I decided to pinch down the barbs on my worm hooks to see how many bass I would lose--none. It sure made it easy to get the deep hooks out.

If you do it right, the hook comes right out. Definitely a tip everyone should learn. I have saved many fish since learning this tip a couple years ago.

Leave the hook and cut your line.

I am not trying to put down anyone for getting the hook out of a gutted fish. I have been fishing most of my life (64 Years young) and have experimented with fish that swallowed hooks. I have never been able to get the hook out without the fish dying later. I have put them in the live well and monitored there well being and they have later died. I have cut the line and let the hook go back into their stomach (the stomach acid over a period of time will desolve the hook unless you are using stainless) and they have lived. If you pull the hook out, you make a hole in their stomach and I don't think they will live when you do this JMHO.

I agree 100%. That's the beauty of the system I posted. If you study it carefully, you aren't pulling the hook out you are pushing the hook out. I wish you knew someone who could show you this technique. It is very easy and effective.

Learned this trick a few years ago, works great.
I usually cut the line about a foot above the hook. Then feed the line down through gills and use the line to pull the hook "upside down". Easier than reaching up in with something and trying to grab the hook.

This tip looks too easy and too good to be true. I guess I'll have to give it a shot.

    Re: Gut Hook Removal (TRCM)

How well does this work with a bait such as a tube where the round jig head and hook shank are covered by the plastic of the tube? I damaged a good 3.5 smallmouth recently and felt really bad. I cut the line and just let her have the jig hoping she will survive.
