Homade trolling motor foot control recessed tray

Just wondering if anyone has made their own recessed tray for the foot control to a trolling motor. I have installed the metal powder coated brand one in my last boat and it was a jam up job. The only thing I didn't like was 140 bucks for a "tray" and a template. Seems to me that there should be a plastic tray like "rubbmaid" or something you could find for 10 bucks and accomplish the same results. Thanks, Bassin1- Les.

I made one out of scrap diamond plate we had laying around. Aluminum is light weight and good looking and won't break or rust! Just got the measurements off of comfortroll or whatever the other company is.

I think I might start trying to sell some of them. If you know anyone that wants one IM me.

Great job, thats what I call inginuity. I am going to start looking for some heavy pvc trays and hope I come across one that will work. If I hit the jackpot I'll be sure to post. Thanks for the inspiration. Bassin1- Les

I made my own and mounted it under the deck. I traced my MinnKota pedal onto the deck and cut only as much as needed. I then rolled the carpet back down into the hole to cover the edges. That way there is only about a 1" gap around the pedal. The nice snug fit just feels better for me, no gap to snag your feet in.

I also like the finished look better.

Troll Well is a new sponsor - I just installed one of their fiberglass trays - $90 for gelcoat, about $30 more for a flake finsh to match your boat. Easy install

Re: Homade trolling motor foot control recessed tray (Jim285pro)

I made an MDF form "negative" to specs of many aftermarket trays, covered it in duct tape and then laid fiberglass mat over it and soaked w/ fiberglass resin. repeat 3-4x and let sit for 24 hrs. The tape allows it to pop off the form and you have the smoothness of the wood and sized/shaped as you design. I hit mine w/ aerosol bed liner and dropped it in and it works like a champ. $50 in material, and about 3 hrs of total work.
I am getting another boat and adding a tray to it, this time I will add a recessed hole for garlic spray or pliers in the leading edge.

I will say MAJOR props on the gel caoted one pic'd above, that looks awesome, and the price almost justifies the fiberglass guy to buy vs build!
