Thank god for this post. I just started getting this crap on my motor today. I will give the vinegar and water a shot first then the CLR!

When I got the boat home I tried to use BBS and a green scotch pad which was dumb I think. I may have scratched the paint. I tried to use Vinegar/Water and CLR and had no luck. I may need to use the hard stuff (acid) or re-paint.

want a cheap fix to get that discoloration off your lower unit of your boat. take some snow bowl, (i think its snow bowl) im not going downstairs to look. but it is that toilet cleaner. it is a blue liquid. cost about 3bucks and last forever. be sure to use gloves when using it. the acid will eat off the scum due to the water friction and will not harm your paint. it will make it look like brand new. try it and save your money instead of buying the expensive stuff sold at pro shops. NaCl is salt no matter which brand you buy.

Re: Removing white chalking "stuff" on motor mid section (deception)

I was told by a boat dealer that they use tidy-bowl in the shop to get the lower units clean. He said not to leave it on very long. Put it on and rinse. He said it was cheap and it worked.

Polishing Compound is not as abrasive like rubbing compound. I have done my motor with it, then just a quick wax job.

I tried several different methods, some of which are mentioned here. I even bought a spray on product which is marketed specifically as outdrive cleaner. None of it worked as good as plain ole' automotive cleaner wax and some elbow grease.

"The Works" toilet bowl cleaner does it for me. Toilet bowl cleaners are designed to remove calcium and lime deposits from your chitter. Works great on the motor too.

50% Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and 50% hydrogen peroxide. Works great at removing any stains from your motor or gel coat.

Like Donthelegend said WD 40 works great. Just spray it on and wipe it off. Replls water and gives the motor a new shiny look

Been using Snow Bowl for years--It works great--And is cheap--Just put it on any place that has cal. build up and let it work for about 15-20 seconds and rinse off with water--I put a piece of plasic around my SS prop to avoid spots

I have used vinegar and water,it works fine.I white chaulking is more prevalent if you run your motor high due to the higher heat of the mid, your basically burning off water and leaving a deposit behind.

Best way I have found as well, especially when its to cold out in the winter to rinse the motor...Yep I am still fishing when it is below freezing

Something I found that does a great job and leaves the whole lower unit along with the engine mount brackets and trim cyls looking like brand new, tire black, or shine, the same stuff that you use on the tires of your tow vehicle, or wifes ride. Iv'e been using it for several years with no ill effects, just spray it on lightly wipe off the excess and forget it. A couple treatments and you'll think you have a new motor

I have tried the vinegar and water and zero results...I've tried it on water spots, on carpet that everyone swears works. But CLR is the ticket. Once I use it I wash it off nad then follw up with BBS. Been using BBS and doing this for years and my 2002 is as smooth as silk
