Removing PVS plugs from Mercury props.

Mercury uses the various sizes of PVS plugs to fine tune their props for hole-shot. Getting the plugs out can be a little difficult. I saw a tip from one of the prop guys to use the female end of a ratchet extension to tap them in and the male end to remove them. I found removing them to be difficult so I tried a little paint can opener tool I had. Lowes will give you the opener when you buy paint. The business end of this tool looks like a flat screw driver blade with the tip bent 90 degrees to form a hook. I inserted them into the PVS plug opening and hooked the inside flange and gave it a tug. The plug popped right out and no need to remove the prop. Won't work on the solid plugs unless you drill a hole in them but I doubt most people use the solids. Works great and the tool is free.

BTW when I want to remove the prop I also used this tool to straighten the tabs on the lock washer Mercury uses with their props to keep the nut from backing off. Just hook the bent tabs and pull to straighten them.

Re: Removing PVS plugs from Mercury props. (HighFiveBassin)

Great idea - I just fought with mine the other day while tuning the prop I used a long screw driver and popped them from the inside. With the paint opener you can pull from the outside huh???? I have some more work to do in tuning so I'll give it a try!!! Thanks

Does removing these plugs make a big/noticeable difference in the performance? I have never messed with mine, just wondering.

Great tip. It took a little bit of effort for the first plug, but after getting the hang of it the second plug popped right out. Be aware of where it lands tho! Lol

Only if you are bogging down when getting on plane.

My Stratos 200 pro xl has a 225 Yamaha Ox with a 25p Fury. It did not have any plugs in when I bought the boat last month and it was blowing out horribly.
I Bought a couple and I put 3 of the smallest ones in last week. That was a little too much. Struggled to get on plane quickly. I took one plug out and now my boat jumps on plane without much bow lift at all and zero blow out. 6 dollars worth of vent plugs and it is a different boat!
