How to cut a corner on your new carpet job!

UPDATE: Its been 11 years since I did the carpet over and it's still holding up great. The boat went to a new owner that is fishing it in the BFL and using it hard with no signs of the corners coming loose. People have asked what kind of adhesive I used and did it hold up. I used DAP contact cement for the entire boat. It worked perfect, just follow the directions on the can and make sure EVERYTHING is at the proper temperature. If you re-carpet during the winter be sure you have the boat in a headed garage for quite a while with the temp up to at least 70.

After being on the board for a while there are a ton of questions regarding re carpet jobs. One particular question is "How do I cut the corner?" I figured I'll post this to make it a little easier for those using the search button.

    Step 1:
After the carpet is glued to the top of the lid your ready to cut those corners. Fold the carpet up, one side at a time and mark a straight line along the corner and the side of the lid. When your done one corner should look like the pics below.

    Step 2:
Now you can cut your marks. The first time you do this I recommend that you just cut the straight lines first so your piece that is removed looks like a square. Then you can the angled pieces for where it rolls down the inside of the lid.
This is what you should have when all your cuts are done

    Step 3:
Ok that's pretty much it. Just fold the corners over to make sure they fit properly. If you have excess carpet rolled over into the lid area that's ok you can cut it after the glue dries.

Good luck and if you have any questions just ask!

Here is another thread where jseasor is doing his Ranger over and did a great job on the carpet. When you scroll down you will see he did his lids the same way...has a few better pictures.

good tips Joe. I did mine last fall and I did mine basically the same way. All I can say is:

    1) I am thankful I did not have rivets to drill out...it had the bolts and nuts in all the hinges.

    2) I am thankful I fould out about the 3M 77 Spray glue. That stuff is excellent for deck lids.

This worked best for me: Spray the alum pan and the carpet too. Center the pan on the carpet piece. Spray the carpet flaps last. Spray a bit heavy. Fold over the flaps. Use clothes pins to hold the flaps for about 30 mins. Go to go.

Re: How to cut a corner on your new carpet job! (Falls Lake Fanatic)

I like this way to cut a corner. I saw on here a while back another way to cut corners and it was more complicated , anyone use this method and like it?

Does anyone have any other illustrations in regards to cutting corners on lids? After studying and thinking about this method, I am not sure I like the idea of the seam being right on the corner like that. Seems like you are putting the weakest spot in the carpet (the seam) in the place that will possibly get the most "wear and tear".

    Re: (jaredpointer)

This is how I did most of mine, my first two I did with the seam angling up one side
(no pics of that one} I used the old carpet as a pattern, after my first two I decided
I did not like it much. accutally the least pressure is right in the corner,
Mine came out great and you cannot even see the seam. Roberts outdoor
carpet glue on top and weldwood contact gel on the sides.

The seam is actually where you get the least amount of wear and tear. This is how the boat was from the factory and it lasted 15 years with no signs of wear. Also it's the easiest place to hide the seam. Go look at a Nitro, not knocking Nitro but that's where I saw it, you will see where they put the seam along the side and on an angle. sticks out like a sore thumb and makes the carpet job look cheap.
