What is it, about 1" excess all the way around?

The excess depends on the lid lip depth. The best thing to do is measure the lip, take that times 2 (if the carpet folds under the lip) and add a quarter inch to it. See how it comes out on the first lid and make adjustments, if needed for the rest.
