Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 357.49 Surface Temperature - 85
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.45 Surface Temperature - 85

Both lakes are one and one half feet below summer pool and on a slow draw down. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 21,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 9,300 cfs this morning. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: Some cooler days and cooler nights this week were a welcome reprieve from the heat wave we were under for the past few weeks here at the lakes. As you can see, water temperatures dropped 4 degrees since my report last week. This water temperature drop assisted by some current draw in the afternoons this past week resulted in raising the oxygen levels slightly. Although overall the ledge bite has remained scattered, we did experience a more active bite on a few ledges early in the morning this week which had not been present in the past few weeks. The early morning and late evening shallow water bite I have been reporting in the creeks and bays near wood cover where bass are feeding on schools of fry has continued to be the more consistant pattern.

We had another cold front pass through the area last night and the weather forecast looks good for a continuation of these cooler temperatures. As a matter of fact, the forecasted low for tonight is for a low in the 50's. The forecast for Saturday is for a high of 84/night time low of 65 with wind SE at 10. Sunday's forecast is showing another frontal passage with a high of 83/night time low of 69 with an 80% chance of scattered thunderstorms with wind S at 7. The extended forecast through mid next week is calling for high's in the low 80's, low's in the mid 60's and overall light winds.

Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on primary points on the main lake as well as on ledges on the main lake and in the mouths of creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on swim baits, spoons, Texas rigged large worms, drop shot rigs, shaky heads, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Largemouth are being taken in the backs of the creeks and bays early and late in the day on topwater lures as they are feeding on schools of fry. Some Largemouth are also being taken shallow near isolated wood cover and around docks with cover during the day on spinner baits, texas rigged creature baits, jigs, tube jigs and Senko type baits.

Smallmouth Bass: Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and on ledges during the day on jigs and Carolina rigged creature baits. Smallmouth and Largemouth are being taken at night on rocky main lake points and rocky points inside the mouths of creeks and bays on dark skirted spinner baits, jigs and tube jigs.

Productive Lures: Some of the productive lures reported this week are Lucky Craft Sammy in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King spash baits in white, Big Hammer swim baits in sexy smelt and bay smelt, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in cumberland craw and black/blue, Charmer and Zoom large worms in plum and green pumpkin on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs, Charmer lizards and timber pups on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin, green pumpkin/blue and watermelon/purple, Charmer shaky head worms and zoom trick worms on shaky head jigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple and Charmer tubes in smoke purple on tube jig heads rigged stupid style.

White Bass: White Bass are being taken along main lake ledges and the ledges around the mouths of the creeks and bays with in line spinners and blade baits fished vertically as well as around mayfly hatches near overhanging trees early and late in the day. The mayfly hatches are not large but some smaller hatches are still occuring on some nights. There has been some early morning jumps around the mouths of the creeks and bays but they are not lasting very long but some fish can be taken in these jumps with inline spinners and small spoons cast into the surface feeding fish.

Catfish: Channels and blues are being taken along river ledges in 20-30 feet of water on cut baits on bottom rigs. This bite is better during the afternoon and evening periods when current is being generated.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON VISITING OUR LAKES I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING BUSINESSES FOR ALL YOUR FISHING AND BOATING NEEDS:

Fisherman’s Headquarters is located in Draffenville at the U.S. 68/U.S. 641 triangle, or the Draffenville "Y". FHQ stocks everything an angler could need, from live bait, hooks and bobbers to top of the line tournament bass tackle. More than a "bait and tackle" store, Fisherman’s Headquarters is a true "pro shop", offering advice, training and special order assistance not found online or at the big box retailers. Services even include custom electronics training and installation. The store offers a wide variety of nationally known brands as well as many regional and hard to find items we use on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. They stock many of the products I rely on daily, such as Charmer Baits, Slong’s lures, Picasso lures, Bag 5 lures and Pro Tungsten weights. From bluegill to bass and catfish to crappie, FHQ has you covered! Stop by and visit or phone 270-527-5938

Jet-A-Marina: If you have a problem with your boat while you are visiting our great fisheries, let me recommend you have the folks in the service department at Jet-a-Marina check it out. These folks have a well known reputation for trying to keep our visitors on the water while they are here if they can possibly do so, especially you tournament anglers. Hopefully you will not need this kind of assistance but if you do, you can find Jet-a-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City, just a couple of miles north of Kentucky Dam. Jet-a-Marina also has a great showroom for all your boating accessories and check out the new Ranger bass boats too as well as bulk oil at rock bottom prices for your engine. Phone: 270-395-4030.

    GUIDE SERVICE:

For those of you that may not be familiar with my service: I am a full time catch and release bass fishing guide. I only guide for bass. I have been guiding for bass full time on these lakes for over 20 years and bass fishing the lakes for over 30 years. I do not go out and fish panfish for 4 or 5 days and then try to guide on bass for one or two days.

No one knows everything the bass are doing but one thing is for sure, if you only fish for bass day in and day out, you will have a lot better idea of what they are doing and also be familiar with all the different techniques it takes to be a successful bass angler.

If you book with my service, you will have me as your guide and you will be guided in the comfort of a late model Z522 Ranger Commanche equipped with Lowrance HDS electronics and top of the line tackle. I provide just for fun bass fishing trips, tournament preparation trips, focused teaching trips and technique instruction. If you are in need of a bass fishing guide give me a call or drop me an email.

    Ledge Teaching:

I am also taking bookings for my Ledge Teaching trip. The Ledge Teaching trip consists of both classroom and time on the water. This trip not only teaches you how to find the highest percentage ledges but also what you are looking for on your electronics and how to interpret what you are seeing, how to search the ledges, set up on the ledges as well as making decisions on what type lures you should be throwing depending on enviromental conditions. You do not learn how to find and fish the best ledges by simply looking at your electronics....it takes knowledge to find and fish the best ledges, the electronics are just a tool to assist you in seeing the fish afer you find them.

    Available Dates:

August: I still have some dates available, make your reservations now to get the date(s) you want.

Of course I am taking reservations for the rest of the season also through November. Make your reservations now to get the dates you want.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 357.80 Surface Temperature - 83
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.80 Surface Temperature - 83

Both lakes are just slightly more than one foot below summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 28,500 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 17,800 cfs at mid day today. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: We have had another week of nice weather here at the lakes this week with high's in the 80's and low's in the 60's. We have not had any current on the lakes this week and lake levels rose about one half foot since my last report due to some heavy rains this past weekend here and up river. The ledge bite continues to be scattered and slow. The water temperatures however have dropped another 2 degrees since last week with the cooler nights. The better bite continues to be early in the morning with top water lures in the shallows back in the creeks and bays. Some early top water bite has now emerged on the main lake on points and on some shallow water flats as some schools of fry have now made thier way out to the main lake area. The better day time pattern continues to be "junk" fishing around isolated wood cover and docks with associated wood cover using spinner baits, jigs, tube jigs, senko type baits and fluke type baits. If the water temperatures continue to drop as they have over the past 2 weeks, I expect we will start seeing a transition to early fall patterns in about 3 weeks.

The forecast for the tomorrow is for a high of 85/night time low of 68 with a 40% chance of evening thunderstorms and wind WSW at 6. Saturday's forecast is showing a high of 85/night time low of 65 with wind NNE at 10. Sunday's forecast is for a high of 82/night time low of 67 with a 50% chance of scattered thunderstorms and wind E at 5. The extended forecast is showing day time high's in the 80's and night time low's in the 60's with light winds.

FLASH: Here is an except from an email I and many others in the lakes area received from the U.S. Coast Guard this week that I thought would be of interest to folks that live here and also those that will be visiting here for the up coming total eclipse event later this month:

With the pending eclipse and the tourism it will generate, there is greater opportunity that some will attempt to take passengers out on their vessels or offer guide services without the proper license.

Carrying passengers for hire or for consideration, direct (cash payment) or indirect (renting your campsite with the understanding that you will take them out on the pontoon boat), requires a Coast Guard licensed/credentialed operator as per 46 U.S. Code (USC) 8903.

The Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 (attached) defines "passenger for hire" and "consideration" as follows:

    SEC. 506. PASSENGER FOR HIRE.
Section 2101 of title 46, United States Code
"(21a) 'passenger for hire' means a passenger for whom consideration is contributed as a condition of carriage on the vessel, whether directly or indirectly flowing to the owner, charterer, operator, agent, or any other person having an interest in the vessel.".

    SEC. 507. CONSIDERATION.
Section 2101 of title 46, United States Code
"(5a) 'consideration' means an economic benefit, inducement, right, or profit including pecuniary payment accruing to an individual, person, or entity, but not including a voluntary sharing of the actual expenses of the voyage, by monetary contribution or donation of fuel, food, beverage, or other supplies.".

The U.S. Coast Guard conducts patrols on the lakes continuously. Please be patient and understanding of our boarding officers that may come aboard to ensure compliance with all federal laws and regulations. If there is ever an issue, please contact me.

If you are not credentialed and are offering these services, then I remind you that operating an uninspected passenger vessel without proper Coast Guard issued credentials may subject the operator to civil penalties of up to $38,175.00 per day as outlined in 46 USC 8906.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the below contact numbers, or LT Daniel Parker at 270-442-1621 ext 2119, or at Daniel.m.parker@uscg.mil.

    stl-pf-msupaducah-investigations@uscg.mil

Note: I posted this here on my report to hopefully inform those that may unknowingly break this law and find themselves in an embarrassing and financially hardship situation. For those of you coming here for the eclipse celebrations or any other time: If you contract with anyone to pay them a consideration to be a passenger in their vessel for any other reason than a voluntary sharing of the actual expenses for that voyage you should ask if they are licensed to operate that vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard. There are no valid excuses for accepting payment and not being properly credentialed as required by the above mentioned federal regulations.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 358.03 Surface Temperature - 83
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.00 Surface Temperature - 83

Both lakes are one foot below summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 46,900 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 27,600 cfs this morning. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: The heat and humidity moved back into the lakes area this past week with daily heat indexes reaching near or at the 100 degree mark each day. As you can see the water temperatures have remained the same as last week due to this latest heat wave. Heavy rains up the rivers have kept the lake levels within inches of where they were last week also. A front moved though the area yesterday which will move back north through the lakes area as a warm front over the weekend keeping the day time temperatures in the 90's with some higher heat indexes. The next significant cold front is forecasted to move through the lakes area next Wednesday and if the extended forecast is correct, we should return to more favorable day time highs and night time low's to drop start dropping the water temperatures again late next week and move us closer to the beginnings of the early fall transition patterns.

As I mentioned in last week's report, a number of the schools of the spring fry have moved out of the shallows in the creeks and bays to the main lake as well as the front halves of the creeks and bays. This movement is providing some scattered early and late top water bite on secondary points in the creeks and bays as well as on main lake points and main lake flats. After the morning bite, it becomes a matter of junk fishing points, docks and isolated wood cover with finesse baits to put a limit in the boat. This bite is scattered as these schools of small fry are moving around quite a lot so basically I would continue to call the overall bass bite as slow and scattered. This slow and scattered bite includes the ledges where the fish have been scattered and finicky for the most part too. This movement of schools of fry is not the fall transition. The fall transition begins when large schools of shad start showing up in the shallows in the creeks and bays from deeper water...not fry moving out to deeper water.

An example of the scattered bite is shown from the results of 2 tournaments held here last weekend. In one tournament, there was only one 5 fish limit weighed in and in the other, two 5 fish limits weighed in. Like I have said before in the past, this is not the type of report I like to provide, but it is what it is and I am not going to report a good bite just to try to generate business. If you want to go out and learn how to catch a few fish when the bite is tough and a lot of folks are not catching any fish, then I would be happy to take you out and show you how not to zero out there.

FLASH: Expect heavy boat traffic on the lake this weekend and on Monday with the crowds coming in to veiw the total eclipse on Monday. Please exercise caution, drive your boat defensively and be courteous to other boaters. Let's get though this weekend without any boating accidents.

Catfish: Channels and blues are being taken along river ledges in 20-30 feet of water on cut baits on bottom rigs. The catfish bite has been good this week with current having been generated around the clock.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 356.90 Surface Temperature - 83
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 356.75 Surface Temperature - 83

Both lakes are 2 feet below summer pool and on a slow draw down. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 46,000 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 28,000 cfs this afternoon. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: The short heat wave we experienced over this past weekend and earlier this week raised the water temperatures a couple of degrees but the cooling down we have had after Tuesday's frontal passage has dropped the water temperatures back to present levels. The extended forecast looks good for more cooling of the water temperatures moving us closer the temperatures we need to start the early fall transition patterns. The bass bite is still slow and scattered on the lakes with some being taken off ledges and some being taken off points on the main lake and in the creeks and bays, especially near wood cover. There is still some early and late top water bite here and there but mostly on the secondary points in the creeks and bays and some on the main lake as the spring fry schools have moved deeper. Overall the bite remains slow and scattered.

Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on primary points on the main lake as well as on ledges on the main lake and in the mouths of creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on swim baits,Texas rigged large worms, drop shot rigs, shaky heads, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Largemouth are being taken on secondary points in the creeks and bays as well as on main lake points and shallow flats early and late in the day on topwater lures as they are feeding on schools of fry. Some Largemouth are also being taken shallow near isolated wood cover and around docks with cover during the day on spinner baits, texas rigged creature baits, jigs, tube jigs, Senko type baits and flukes.

Productive Lures: Some of the productive lures reported this week are Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King spash baits in white, Big Hammer swim baits in sexy smelt and bay smelt, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in cumberland craw and black/blue, Charmer and Zoom large worms in green pumpkin on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs, Charmer lizards and timber pups on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin, green pumpkin/blue and watermelon/purple, Charmer shaky head worms and zoom trick worms on shaky head jigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple and Charmer tubes in smoke purple and green pumpkin/orange flake on tube jig heads rigged stupid style, Zoom fluke junior in white and variations of green pumpkin robo worms on drop shot rigs.

White Bass: White Bass are being taken along main lake ledges and the ledges around the mouths of the creeks and bays with in line spinners and blade baits fished vertically as well as by trolling medium running crank baits in these areas.

Catfish: Channels and blues are being taken along river ledges in 20-30 feet of water on cut baits on bottom rigs.

Services even include custom electronics training and installation. The store offers a wide variety of nationally known brands as well as many regional and hard to find items we use on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes. They stock many of the products I rely on daily, such as Charmer Baits, Slong’s lures, Picasso lures and Pro Tungsten weights. From bluegill to bass and catfish to crappie, FHQ has you covered! Stop by and visit or phone 270-527-5938FLASH: Fisherman's Headquarters has recently received a shipment of the sought after Realis crank baits and jerk baits as well as Lucky Craft 100 series Sammy's and 115 Series Gunfish in my favorite Ghost Pearl Lemon colors just in time for the upcoming fall bite. The store also now has a selection of the now popular "HeyBo" clothing in stock.

August: Sorry, I am booked up.
September, October and November: I have a number of dates available. Make your reservations now for the fall fishing to get the date(s) you want.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.60 Surface Temperature - 80
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.45 Surface Temperature - 80

Both lakes are 3.5 feet below summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 57,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 42,000 cfs this morning. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: Water temperatures have dropped 3 degrees since last week's report. Although we are still finding the bass scattered the bite has picked up some with the better oxygen levels and we have put more numbers of bass in the boat, but numbers of bigger fish are still low. The big news is that the remnants of Harvey came into the lakes area last night and has dumped some heavy rains in the area but even more so in the areas up the rivers in Tennessee and Alabama.

The TVA has pulled the lakes down over the past few days to present levels in anticipation of a large influx of water from these heavy rains up the rivers. The current lake levels are about 1.5 feet below where we normally would be at this first day in September. Projections by the TVA have been changing rapidly over the last couple of days as to how high the levels may or may not go over the next few days. I have seen projections from summer pool levels to near winter pool levels by Monday. One thing is for sure, boaters this weekend need to be aware of where they are running if the lake levels remain this low or go lower. If the lake levels do rise as to near summer pool levels, I expect the shallow water bite will turn on as the water covers up the grass that has grown on the shallow flats in the backs of the creeks and bays.

The weather forecast for the holiday weekend is looking good as the remnants of Harvey will be exiting the lakes area later today. Expect high levels of boat traffic so please drive your boat defensively and be courteous to the other boaters and anglers. Let's get through this last big holiday weekend on the lakes for the season without any accidents!

We have high wind warnings out today but Saturday's forecast is showing a high of 79/low of 54 with wind WNW at 9. Sunday and Monday look good with high's in the 80's/low's in the 60's with light south quadrant winds. The extended forecast for next week is showing high's in the 70's/low's in the 50's with north quadrant winds. If this forecast is correct, the water temperatures are going to continue to drop and I expect we will be in the early stages of the fall transition by the end of the week if not sooner.

Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on primary points on the main lake as well as on ledges on the main lake and in the mouths of creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on swim baits, Texas rigged large worms, drop shot rigs, shaky heads, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Largemouth are being taken on secondary points in the creeks and bays as well as on main lake points and shallow flats early and late in the day on top water lures as they are feeding on schools of fry.

White Bass: White Bass are being taken by vertically fishing with inline spinners and blade baits on river ledges and around the mouths of the creeks and bays as well as by trolling medium running crank baits on main lake flats and in the creeks and bays.

Catfish: Catfish are being taken in the main river channel ledges in 20-30 feet of water on cut baits and prepared baits on bottom rigs. This bite has been reported as good with the current this week.

*Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.46 Surface Temperature
    - 76*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.60 Surface Temperature -
    76*

*Both lakes are 3.5 feet below summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at
an average rate of 34,000 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was generating
at an average rate of 18,000 cfs this afternoon. * *The latest lake levels
, current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *Late last week the remnants of Hurricane Harvey was
forecasted to come through the lakes area Friday and Saturday. The TVA
pulled the lakes down to near winter pool levels in anticipation of a lot
of water to be dropped in the local area as well as up the Tennessee
river. Well, this did not happen. The remnants of Harvey actually came
through further east of us and the end result was that a lot of rain was
dropped in the Cumberland river upstream from the lakes. This resulted in
a lot of water coming into Lake Barkley but not much coming into Kentucky
Lake. Barkley had a lot of current and muddy water from this large influx
of water coming in from up stream. Barkley water clarity remains heavily
stained in most areas. Kentucky Lake water clarity ranges from light stain
to clear. The TVA has been raising the water a little every day over the
past couple of days as we are still about a foot below where we should be
    on the fall drawdown.

I have spent the last 2 days on Kentucky Lake from the dam to Paris and I
can tell you that the large schools of threadfin moving into the shallows
which signals the start of the fall transition has happened yet. The same
report from last week still stands in that the bite is still slow and
scattered with some bass being taken on top water lures early and late
back shallow in the creeks and bays and on main lake flats. Some are also
being taken on secondary points in the creeks and bays and main lake points
on slower techniques. A few fish are still being taken on ledges on slower
techniques but the bite is slow and scattered. I expect the transition
will start any day now as we are in the water temperature range for this to
happen. I will keep you posted through my reports here when this happens.

*Largemouth Bass:* Largemouth are being taken on primary points on the main
lake as well as on ledges on the main lake and in the mouths of creeks and
bays. These fish are being taken on Texas rigged large worms, drop shot
rigs, shaky heads, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Largemouth are
being taken on secondary points in the creeks and bays as well as on main
lake points and shallow flats early and late in the day on top water lures
as they are feeding on schools of fry. Some Largemouth are also being taken
on shallow flats in the creeks and bays and on the main lake early and late
in the day on top water lures.

*Smallmouth Bass:* Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and
secondary points in the creeks and bays. The fish are being taken on top
water lures, finesse jigs and shaky heads.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs

pumpkin on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs, Charmer lizards and timber pups on
Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin, green pumpkin/blue and
watermelon/purple, Charmer shaky head worms and zoom trick worms on shaky
head jigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple and Charmer tubes in smoke
purple and green pumpkin/orange flake on tube jig heads rigged stupid
style, Zoom fluke junior in white and variations of green pumpkin robo
    worms on drop shot rigs.

*White Bass:* White Bass are being taken along main lake ledges and the
ledges around the mouths of the creeks and bays with in line spinners and
blade baits fished vertically as well as by trolling medium running crank
    baits in these areas.

    - 76*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.40 Surface Temperature -
    76*

*Both lakes are 3.5 feet below summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at
an average rate of 30,300 cfs at mid day today. Barkley Dam was generating
at an average rate of 18,200 cfs at mid day today. * *The latest lake
levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *I did not write my weekly fishing report this past
Thursday because I had not been on the lake last week. We had lake wind
warning out last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with strong north winds and
I was off Thursday with a doctor's appointment. As those of you that
follow my weekly report know, I will not write a report unless I have
verified information thus no report was written. I did get out this
weekend and have been telling you in my last reports that I would let you
know when the early fall transition has actually begun. We had below
average temperatures during the early part of last week and the water
temperatures dropped to 74 by Wednesday.

This started moving the shad and some of the large schools of small
threadfin have shown up now in the shallows in some of the creeks and
bays. These schools of small threadfin showing up in the shallows signals
the beginning of the fall transition. Not all the creeks and bays I
checked this weekend had these schools in them yet but this is normal and
it won't be long until there are schools of these small baitfish in all of
the creeks and bays. The transition to full fall patterns usually takes
about 6-7 weeks so I expect the bite to still be somewhat scattered as the
shad are moving now with the bass following. We caught bass, both short
fish and keepers around these large schools of shallow young shad this
weekend on top water lures early then on lipless crank baits and spinner
baits this weekend. We also took fish on shakey heads and finesse jigs on
secondary creek channel points in the creeks and bays but most of these
fish were short fish and somewhat scattered.

The water temperatures have risen a couple of degrees over the past couple
days with the heat returning and probably will rise a little more this week
with the forecast having day time highs in the mid to upper 80's and night
time low's in the 60's through this next week. There is also a chance of
scattered thunderstorms in the forecast for Monday evening, Tuesday morning
    and Tuesday night.

I also received a report from a friend of mine today of some Smallmouth
being taken around shallow rock with close deep water access on finesse
jigs on Lake Barkley this weekend.

*Largemouth Bass:* Largemouth are being taken on primary points on the main
lake. These fish are being taken on Texas rigged large worms, drop shot
rigs, shaky heads, Carolina rigged creature baits and jigs. Largemouth are
also being taken on secondary points in the creeks and bays as well as on
main lake points and shallow flats early and late in the day on top water
lures as they are feeding on schools of small threadfin. Largemouth are
also being taken on shallow flats in the creeks and bays and on the main
lake early and late in the day on top water lures. Largemouth are also
being taken on shallow flats in the creeks and bays as they are feeding on
schools of small threadfin. These fish are being taken on lipless crank
baits, spinner baits and square billed crank baits.

*Smallmouth Bass:* Smallmouth are being taken on rocky main lake points and
secondary points in the creeks and bays. The fish are being taken on top
water lures early, finesse jigs and shaky heads.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy
shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, D&L jigs in
"oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in cumberland craw and black/blue,
Charmer lizards and timber pups on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green
pumpkin, green pumpkin/blue and watermelon/purple, Charmer shaky head worms
and zoom trick worms on shaky head jigs in green pumpkin and
watermelon/purple and Zoom fluke junior in white and variations of green
pumpkin robo worms on drop shot rigs.

*White Bass:* White Bass are being taken along main lake ledges and flats
as well as ledges around the mouths of the creeks and bays with in line
spinners and blade baits fished vertically as well as by trolling medium
running crank baits in these areas.

*Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.58 Surface Temperature
    - 80*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.45 Surface Temperature -
    80*

*Both lakes are one and one half feet above winter pool. Kentucky Dam was
generating at an average rate of 30,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was
generating at an average rate of 18,000 cfs this morning. **The latest
lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be
    found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *I mentioned in last week's report that the early
fall transition had begun with schools of young threadfin having moved into
the shallows with the water temperature drop we experienced with the below
normal air temperatures last week. Well, summer returned with a vengeance
this week with above normal air temperatures and this resulted in a water
temperature increase of 5 degrees since my last report. These raising
water temperatures combined with high pressure, blue skies and flat water
all this week have made for a slow and scattered bite on the bass. The
early morning and late evening top water bite we had last week has
diminished to almost nil this week. Our best pattern this week has been
fishing finesse techniques such as shaky heads, drop shots and finesse jigs
on primary and secondary creek channel banks and points in the creeks and
bays. This pattern has been producing some numbers of small fish with an
occasional keeper now and then. The key to this pattern is to fish slow
and keep focused as the bite is not aggressive and be patient as the bite
    is scattered.

This heat wave is forecasted to continue through mid next week with day
time high's in the 90's and night time low's in the mid to upper 60's along
with more blue skies and light winds. I expect this will raise the water
temperatures another degree or two if this forecast holds. The next
cooling frontal passage is forecasted for late next Wednesday after which
the forecast is showing a return to more seasonable air temperatures.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy
shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, Slong's spinner
baits in blue glimmer, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's
jigs in cumberland craw and black/blue, Charmer lizards and timber pups on
Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin, green pumpkin/blue and
watermelon/purple, Charmer shaky head worms and zoom trick worms on shaky
head jigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple and Zoom fluke junior in
white and variations of green pumpkin robo worms on drop shot rigs.

*White Bass:* White Bass are being taken along main lake ledges and flats
as well as ledges around the mouths of the creeks and bays with in line
spinners and blade baits fished vertically as well as by trolling medium
running crank baits in these areas.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.43 Surface Temperature - 74
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.25 Surface Temperature - 74

Both lakes are slightly more than one foot over winter. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 38,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 19,600 cfs this morning. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

Current Conditions: First let me thank all those folks that contacted me this week to check on my well being as I have not written a report in the past 2 weeks. I failed to mention in my last report that I would be out of town attending my annual military reunion and thus would not be writing a report. I had a great time seeing all my old military buddies but happy to be back on the water this week.

We finally got some cooler weather this week and dropped the water temperatures a little more but we are still about 6 degrees above our normal water temperatures for this time in October due to all the heat waves we have experienced over the past few weeks. This up and down on the water temperatures has prolonged the fall transition and for the most part the fish are still scattered and folks are finding limits of bass hard to come by. In the last few large tournaments here over the past 3 weeks there have been some nice weights coming to the scales in the top 4-5 boats but then the weights drop rapidly with a lot of anglers struggling to get a limit of bass. It seems those bigger bags of bass are coming in from the south end of the lake where a few anglers have found some nice schools of bass feeding on top water lures but even those reports indicate that the fishing was spotty and they were having to cover a lot of water to fill their limits.

We caught bass on the north ends of both lakes this week with a lot of action on shorter fish but have managed to put some keeper plus sized fish in the boat. Our best producing techniques this week were shaky heads and tube jigs fished slow on secondary points in the creeks and bays. I have received a few reports of a scattered top water bite as well as crank bait and spinner bait bite on the north ends of the lakes but the reports indicate these patterns have been spotty.

The forecast for Saturday is for near record high temperature of 86 with a night time low of 67 with south winds 10-15. Sunday's forecast is showing a high of 69/ night time low of 45 with a frontal passage during the late morning hours. A 70% chance of rain is forecasted for Sunday with winds swapping from the south in the early morning to northwest at 10-15 mph. With these wind forecasts, I would expect some rough water out there on the lakes this weekend so plan your trips accordingly. The extended forecast is showing a return to more seasonable temperatures though next week with high's in the 70's and low's in the 40's with post frontal north and east quadrant winds. Hopefully this forecast is correct and we can get these water temperatures down and get the bass in a more active fall pattern.

Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on main lake points as well as secondary points and channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on medium running crank baits, spinner baits, Carolina rigged creature baits, shaky heads and tube jigs. A few Largemouth are being taken in shallow cuts on the main lake as well as on shallow flats in the creeks and bays on top water lures, lipless crank baits and Senko type baits near isolated wood cover.

Smallmouth Bass: Smallmouth are being taken on rocky main lake points and rocky secondary points in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on shaky heads and tube jigs. We had a few nice Smallmouth this week on the tube jigs rigged stupid style.

Crappie: I had a few reports of Crappie now being taken around submerged brush and stake beds in 7-10 feet of water in the creeks and bays by vertically fishing with tube jigs and tube jigs tipped with minnows. These reports indicated these fish were being taken on the overcast days we had this week.

Productive Lures: Some of the productive lures reported this week are Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, Bandit medium running crank baits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Slong's spinner baits in blue glimmer, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in cumberland craw and mustang, Charmer lizards and timber pups on Texas rigs and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple, Charmer slim daddy's in blue craw on shaky heads in green pumpkin and Charmer tubes rigged stupid style in green pumpkin/blue tail and green pumpkin/orange.

*Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.33 Surface Temperature
    - 70*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.25 Surface Temperature -
    70*

*Both lakes are one foot over winter pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at
an average rate of 46,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at
an average rate of 29,400 cfs this morning. **The latest lake levels ,
current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *Water temperatures continue to be on a roller
coaster pattern with water temperatures dropping to the high 60's earlier
this week with a couple of mornings with air temperatures in the 30's and
now on the rise again as another wave of higher than normal air
temperatures for this time of year over the past couple days. The water
temperatures are still running about 5 degrees above normal for this time
in October and this has keep the fish stuck in transitions patterns of
being scattered and the bass bite remains scattered and overall slow.
Tournament results from this past weekend showed again only a few bags
having a tournament limit of 5 fish with a large number of bags only
getting 2 keepers or less. An example would be the Illinois Team Trail
classic held last Friday and Saturday. The tournament winners won a new
Ranger boat with 25lbs total over the 2 days. This is an average of 12.5
lbs per day. There was a team that had a 20lb bag the first day with a
10lb kicker and then they zeroed on day 2.

I have talked to a lot of bass anglers this week that are reporting
catching a few short fish or only one or two keepers in one or two days of
fishing. I have not had any days without bass this week but most of our
catch has been short fish with a keeper now and then. We are still finding
the bite scatted and slow. Our most productive pattern this week has still
be fishing finesse techniques on secondary points and channel banks in the
creeks and bays. We have taken a few fish on the shallow flats in the
creeks and bays on top water and lipless crank baits but almost all these
    fish were short fish.

We have another cold front coming through the lakes area on Sunday and the
extended forecast into next week looks good to drop the water temperatures,
lets hope this forecast holds and the water temperatures drop to more
seasonable levels and get the bass more actively feeding. The forecast for
tomorrow is for a high of 78/night time low of 54 with wind S at 10.
Saturday's forecast is showing a high of 79/ night time low of 63 with wind
SSE 10-15, Sunday is showing a high of 75/ night time low of 56 with a 60%
chance of rain with wind from the S early at 15 and then switching to the
west around mid day with the frontal passage. The extended forecast into
next week is showing a day time high by Wednesday in the 50's with night
time low in the 30's. Rain is in forecast for Monday and Tuesday as well
as breezy post frontal winds through Wednesday.

*Largemouth Bass: *Largemouth are being taken on main lake points as well
as secondary points and channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish
are being taken on medium running crank baits, spinner baits, Carolina
rigged creature baits, shaky heads and tube jigs. A few Largemouth are
being taken in shallow cuts on the main lake as well as on shallow flats in
the creeks and bays on top water lures, lipless crank baits and Senko type
    baits near isolated wood cover.

*Smallmouth Bass: *Smallmouth are being taken on rocky main lake points
and rocky secondary points in the creeks and bays. These fish are being
taken on shaky heads and tube jigs. We had a few nice Smallmouth this week
on the tube jigs rigged stupid style.

*Crappie: *I had a few reports of Crappie now being taken around submerged
brush and stake beds in 7-10 feet of water in the creeks and bays by
vertically fishing with tube jigs and tube jigs tipped with minnows. These
reports indicated these fish were being taken on the overcast days we had
    this week.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy
shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, Bandit medium
running crank baits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Slong's spinner baits in blue
glimmer, D&L jigs in "oops" and cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in
cumberland craw and mustang, Charmer lizards and timber pups on Texas rigs
and Carolina rigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple, Charmer slim
daddy's in blue craw on shaky heads in green pumpkin and Charmer tubes
rigged stupid style in green pumpkin/blue tail and green pumpkin/orange.

*ELIMINATING WATER CLASS:* I will be offering my class on how to Eliminate
Water again this winter during the months of January and February and I
will also teach a few classes next month in November. These classes are
limited to one or two people per class. The classes last approximately 8
hours. The cost of the class is 200.00 which covers one or two people.
These classes have been very popular with my clients over the past few
years and all the feedback I get is very positive. Here is some examples of
    that feedback:

**Dave ... Harry and I took your "Eliminating Water" class and it has
helped both of us like you wouldn't believe! - J. Harris

**In the past 3 tourney's I have managed to get a limit on 3 separate
lakes. Old Hickory, Barkley, and Barren. Managed a 3rd place finish Sunday
on Barkley with a 6lb kicker. I have a lot more confidence when I hit the
water now. I no longer pull the old "that bank looks good, lets waste a few
hours here". Thanks Dave - M. King

**Well worth the money - and probably the most valuable thing I have
purchased in the terms of fishing. - K. Stephens

**The eliminating water class is without a doubt the best money I've spent
on fishing in my life. - D. Page

*Here is a short description of the Eliminating Water Class:*

*"How to Eliminate Water":* This class is done in a classroom environment.
In this class you learn the most important thing that you can learn as a
bass fisherman, that is, how eliminate water to find the Bass by finding
the highest percentage spots during all the different seasons of the year
that will hold more fish, more often. In this class you will learn what
information you need to know in order to eliminate water to find these high
percentage spots during your preplanning for a trip and how to apply this
information as well as current environmental conditions to make decisions
on which techniques you should be using when on the water that day and how
to adjust to environment changes that can move your fish or change the
pattern from day to day, season to season.

Basically, what I teach you in this class is how to use knowledge of mother
nature by using scientific knowledge, logic and common sense to develop a
system to find your fish as well as make decisions before you get on the
water and while you are on the water to be a more consistent bass angler.
What I teach you in this class is what I do every day as a bass fishing
guide when I am trying to find and catch bass with my clients. What you
will learn in this class will apply anywhere you go bass fishing, this is
not specific to just Ky and Barkley Lakes.

Finding bass and making decisions as how to catch bass is not done solely
by looking at electronics, it is accomplished with knowledge. There is no
button on your sonar unit or mapping unit that says "Go Find Fish". Sonar
units show you fish AFTER you find them. Mapping units show you just that,
a topographical map of the body of water you are on. The mapping unit
allows you to mark spots on your electronic map where you have found fish
and assist you in navigating back to those spots. Just as with a paper
topographical map, you can scan over an electronic map and mark "places of
interest" or as I call them "looks good" spots to go check out when you get
on the water...but finding high percentage spots are not "looks good"
spots. High percentage spots are selected by having the knowledge of what
type spots have the highest percentage chance of holding bass during the
different seasons of the year coupled with how to apply what is going on in
the environment that will affect the fish.

    *October 27, 2017*

*Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 354.48 Surface Temperature
    - 65*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 354.15 Surface Temperature -
    65*

*Both lakes are basically at winter pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at
an average rate of 46,000 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at
an average rate of 31,200 cfs this morning. **The latest lake levels ,
current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *Below average temperatures earlier this week dropped
the water temperatures 5 degrees since my report last week. Although the
bass bite has still been scattered and overall slow this past week with
still only a few limits coming in to weigh-ins last weekend, I did notice
some movement of some larger shad schools into the creeks and bays this
week. The current forecast would indicate that the water temperatures
should continue to drop over the next week and hopefully this will move us
closer to having a better fall bite as the fish start feeding up for the up
coming winter months. Although we found the bite to still be scattered, we
did have some luck on top water lures, lipless crank baits and spinner
baits this week so hopefully this is a trend that will continue to get
better as the water temperatures drop.

We have a cold front moving through the lakes area this morning with
dropping temperatures through out the day and rain is in the forecast for
this afternoon and tonight. The weekend outlook is showing some cold
temperatures and most likely the first freeze of the season. Saturday's
forecast is calling for a high of 50 with a night time low of 31 with wind
NW at 10. Sunday has a forecasted high of 54 with a night time low of 38
with wind W at 10. Monday's forecast is showing a high of 63 with a night
time low of 38 with wind SW 10-15. Another cold front is forecasted to
move through the area late Monday afternoon bring more day time
temperatures in the 50's and low's in the 30's thought mid week.

*Largemouth Bass: *Largemouth are being taken on secondary points and
channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on medium
running crank baits, spinner baits, Carolina rigged creature baits, shaky
heads and tube jigs. A few Largemouth are being taken in shallow cuts on
the main lake as well as on shallow flats in the creeks and bays on top
water lures, lipless crank baits and Senko type baits near isolated wood
    cover.

*Smallmouth Bass: *Smallmouth are being taken on rocky main lake points
and rocky secondary points in the creeks and bays. These fish are being
taken on shaky heads and tube jigs. Some Smallmouth are also being taken
around submerged crappie beds in the creeks and bays on shaky heads and ned
    rigs.

*Crappie: *I had a few reports of Crappie now being taken around submerged
brush and stake beds in 7-10 feet of water in the creeks and bays by
vertically fishing with tube jigs and tube jigs tipped with minnows. The
reports indicate numbers of small fish are being taken with some occasional
    nice fish.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy
shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, Bandit medium
running crank baits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Slong's spinner baits in blue
glimmer, D&L jigs in "oops" and Cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in
Cumberland craw and mustang, Charmer timber pups on Texas rigs and
Carolina rigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple, Charmer slim daddy's
in blue craw and green pumpkin on shaky heads and Charmer tubes rigged
stupid style in green pumpkin/blue tail and green pumpkin/orange.

if they can possibly do so, especially you tournament anglers. Hopefully
you will not need this kind of assistance but if you do, you can find
Jet-a-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City, just a couple of miles
north of Kentucky Dam. Jet-a-Marina also has a great showroom for all your
boating accessories and check out the new Ranger bass boats too as well as
bulk oil at rock bottom prices for your engine. Phone: 270-395-4030.

    *GUIDE SERVICE:*

For those of you that may not be familiar with my service: I am a full time
catch and release bass fishing guide. I only guide for bass. I have been
guiding for bass full time on these lakes for over 20 years and bass
fishing the lakes for over 30 years. I do not go out and fish panfish for 4
or 5 days and then try to guide on bass for one or two days.

No one knows everything the bass are doing but one thing is for sure, if
you only fish for bass day in and day out, you will have a lot better idea
of what they are doing and also be familiar with all the different
techniques it takes to be a successful bass angler.

If you book with my service, you will have me as your guide and you will be
guided in the comfort of a late model Z522 Ranger Commanche equipped with
Lowrance HDS electronics and top of the line tackle. I provide just for fun
bass fishing trips, tournament preparation trips, focused teaching trips
and technique instruction. If you are in need of a bass fishing guide give
me a call or drop me an email.

- D. Page

*Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 354.75 Surface Temperature
    - 60*
*Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 354.65 Surface Temperature -
    60*

*Both lakes are about one half foot above winter pool. Kentucky Dam was
generating at an average rate of 45,700 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was
generating at an average rate of 29,700 cfs this morning. **The latest
lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be
    found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.*

*Current Conditions: *We have had some cold below average temperatures
over the past week and this has dropped the water temperatures about 5
degrees since last week's report. This is a good thing in that it puts us
more in line with water temperatures we would expect to have to get the
fall bite going, but we are still finding the bite slow and scattered on
the north end of both lakes. This is probably due to the rapid drop in the
water temperatures. A large two day tournament out of Kentucky Dam this
past weekend was won with about 22lbs. This is an average of 11 lbs per
day. A smaller one day tournament of 26 boats was won with 3 fish with
only 6 boats weighing a fish.

The better bite is still being reported on the south end of the lakes. The
FLW Costa Series National Championship will be launching out of Paris, Tn
tomorrow. Reports indicate that most of those folks are practicing south
of Paris in search of a better bite. It will be interesting to see how
these folks do overall as there will be some of the best professional
anglers in the country fishing this tournament.

We have a warm front setting up just south of the lakes today and this is
going to bring us warmer temperatures through the weekend. Forecasted high
temperatures in the 70s and lows in the low 60's are forecasted starting
tomorrow though the weekend with chances of rain and scattered
thunderstorms each day. This forecast has been changing almost hourly for
the past day or so. Anglers should check the latest forecast before
venturing on the water as this type of warm up this time of year can bring
some nasty storms and south winds.

*Largemouth Bass: *Largemouth are being taken on secondary points and
channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on medium
running crank baits, spinner baits, Carolina rigged creature baits, shaky

*Current Conditions: *Bass fishing continued to be slow last week as
indicated in the results of the FLW BFL Wildcard tournament with most of
the field having weighed only one fish or no fish in the two day tournament
with only a few limits weighed in. It only took an 8.5 lb average each day
to qualify for next year's All American tournament. The good news is that
the water temperatures finally dropped into the 50's late last weekend and
I have received a number of reports of schools of shad and bass starting to
move into the shallows over the past few days on both the main lake flats
and in the shallows in the creeks and bays. This indicates the fall bite
is finally getting started and we should start experiencing a more
productive bite over the next few weeks.

*Largemouth Bass: *Largemouth are being taken on secondary points and
channel banks in the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on medium
running crank baits, suspending jerk baits, spinner baits, Carolina rigged
creature baits, shaky heads and tube jigs. Largemouth on shallow flats on
the main lake as well as shallow flats in the creeks and bays on top water
lures, lipless crank baits, square billed crank baits, spinner baits and
Senko type baits near isolated wood cover.

*Smallmouth Bass: *Smallmouth are being taken on rocky main lake points
and rocky secondary points in the creeks and bays. These fish are being
taken on shaky heads and tube jigs. Some Smallmouth are also being taken
around submerged crappie beds in the creeks and bays on shaky heads and ned
    rigs.

*Productive Lures:* Some of the productive lures reported this week are
Lucky Craft Sammy and Lucky Craft Gunfish in ghost pearl lemon, Strike King
spash baits in white, Strike King Red Eye Shad in chrome sexy shad and sexy
shad, Strike King square billed crank baits in sexy shad, Bandit medium
running crank baits in rootbeer/chartreuse, Slong's spinner baits in blue
glimmer, D&L jigs in "oops" and Cumberland craw, Slong's jigs in
Cumberland craw and mustang, Charmer timber pups on Texas rigs and Carolina
rigs in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple, Charmer slim daddy's in blue
craw and green pumpkin on shaky heads and Charmer tubes rigged stupid style
in green pumpkin/blue tail and green pumpkin/orange.

*ELIMINATING WATER CLASS:* I will be offering my class on how to Eliminate
Water again this winter during the months of January and February and I
will also teach a few classes this month in November. These classes are
limited to one or two people per class. The classes last approximately 8
hours. The cost of the class is 200.00 which covers one or two people.
These classes have been very popular with my clients over the past few
years and all the feedback I get is very positive.

Just as with a paper
topographical map, you can scan over an electronic map and mark "places of
interest" or as I call them "looks good" spots to go check out when you get
on the water...but finding high percentage spots are not "looks good"
spots. High percentage spots are selected by having the knowledge of what
type spots have the highest percentage chance of holding bass during the
different seasons of the year coupled with how to apply what is going on in
the environment that affect the fish so that you can make the decisions to
choose the right lures and patterns to be more successful.

*I am currently taking reservations for this class as well as for guided
trips next season. Drop me an email or give me a call to make a
    reservation.*

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 354.12 Surface Temperature - 53
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 354.20 Surface Temperature - 53

Both lakes are at winter pool. Kentucky Dam was spilling at an average rate of 115,400 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was spilling at an average rate of 65,200 this morning.
The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm.

I am a couple of weeks late in getting my weekly fishing reports started this season but the demand for my Eliminating Water classes this winter delayed me from getting back on the water at my usual early March starting time. I am happy to have the new season underway and am happy to now be back on the water. It has been a crazy late winter so far this season with unseasonably warm water temperatures in late February due to flood water coming through the lakes from down south, an early season flooding of the lakes earlier this month where we went from winter pool to 5 feet over summer pool in a few days and a fast draw down over this past week back down to winter pool levels. A return of cooler weather has dropped the water temperatures from the mid 50's to present levels also.

As you can imagine, these large fluctuations in the water levels over the past couple of weeks have kept the bass patterns changing. Hopefully we have seen the last of the flooding for a while and the fish will now settle back into an early pre spawn pattern.

Current Conditions: We still have a lot of water moving through the lakes from up the rivers so there is strong current on both lakes. Kentucky Lake water clarity ranges from stained to clear now and Lake Barkley ranges from heavily stained to stained. There is some floating debris on both lakes but especially on Barkley. Most of the debris has cleared on Kentucky Lake but keep an eye out while running for safety's sake.

The fast draw down of the lakes has somewhat scattered the bass this past week. Bass are being taken from the shallows in the creeks and bays to the deep points and ledges on the main lakes. The wind lately has made fishing a challenge on the main lakes for most anglers. This was reflected in the results of the first FLW Bass Fishing League's tournament this past weekend. Although there were 2 really nice bags of fish taken in the tournament, there were only 7 limits of 5 fish weighed in and it only took 8lbs to get a check. Over two thirds of 150 boats weighed only two fish or less with the largest majority of those folks not weighing any fish.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on the ledges and deep main lake points with current breaks on Alabama rigs and jigs. Largemouth are also being taken in shallow cuts on the main lake near deep water on spinner baits, lipless crank baits and jigs. Largemouth are being taken on creek channel banks and secondary points in the creeks and bays on Alabama rigs, jigs and slow rolled crank baits. Largemouth are also being taken in the shallows in the creeks and bays on spinner baits and lipless crank baits. As you can see, the fish are scattered. Most of the shallow fish are small fish with an occasional nice fish. The majority of the larger fish are coming from deep points and ledges on the main lake and around the mouths of the creeks and bays.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Some nice Smallmouth have been taken as they are on their pre spawn bite right now. Most of these fish are being taken on main lake points and deep points in the mouths of the creeks and bays on Alabama rigs and jigs.

PRODUCTIVE LURES: Alabama rig with Keitech swim baits in French pearl and Pro blue, Big Hammer swim baits in pearl white and sexy smelt, Rapala DT 10 and DT 6 crank baits in crawdad patterns, Rapala Shad Raps in crawdad patterns, Strike King Red Eye Shad in red craw, chrome sexy shad and blue chrome, Rattle Traps in red craw and chrome shad, D&L jigs in black blue and oops patterns, Slong's jigs in black blue, Slong's spinner baits in white/chartreuse.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 355.43 Surface Temperature - 56
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 355.35 Surface Temperature - 55

Both lakes are about one and one half foot above winter pool and on a slow rise. Barring any unforeseen large input of water, the lakes are on schedule to reach summer pool at the end of this month. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 47,000 cfs this morning Barkley Dam was generating at an average rate of 46,700 cfs this morning.

Current conditions: Cold fronts, warm fronts, rain and wind has been the story over the past couple weeks. It is not over yet from the looks of the weather forecast. The weather has kept us off the water a number of days over the past couple weeks but we have managed to get a few days in when it is not cold, raining and/or the wind blowing to bad to be on the water. The Bass bite remains scattered and somewhat slow. We are getting a nice fat big fish now and then but the bigger fish are not coming in numbers for us yet. We are catching a number of smaller bass most days. The confirmed reports I have received and the tournament results lately are mirroring the same as we have been doing. We need some more stable warm weather to get the water temperatures up and the fish biting better.

The forecast for tomorrow looks good with a morning low of 46 and afternoon high of 61 with a chance of rain showers during the late afternoon. Wind is forecasted to be SSW at 8. Another nasty cold front is coming through Friday night and is making the weekend outlook nasty. A forecast of rain and possibly changing over to snow tomorrow night is in the offing. The forecast for Saturday is for a morning low of 30, daytime high of 46 with NNE wind at 15. Sunday's forecast is showing a morning low of 29, daytime high of 49 with wind E at 9 and a 60% chance of rain showers during the afternoon.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on main lake points and banks on crank baits, Alabama rigs, jigs and suspending jerk baits. Largemouth are also being taken in shallow cuts on the main lake near deep water on spinner baits, lipless crank baits, vibrating jigs and jigs. Largemouth are being taken on creek channel banks and secondary points in the creeks and bays on Alabama rigs, jigs, Carolina and Texas rigged creature baits, neko rigs and crank baits. Largemouth are also being taken in the shallows in the creeks and bays on spinner baits, chatter baits and lipless crank baits as well as Texas rigged creature baits. As you can see, the fish are scattered. Most of the shallow fish are small fish with an occasional nice fish.

Crappie: Crappie are being reported as scattered also, with most of the fish still being taken in the 10-20 ft range over submerged cover by vertically fishing with minnow rigs and small jigs tipped with Crappie nibbles. These fish are still staging around the mouths of the creeks and bays with an occasional few fish being taken in 8-10 ft of water on warmer afternoons.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 357.02 Surface Temperature - 56
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 357.00 Surface Temperature - 56

Both lakes are 2 feet below summer pool and on a slow rise. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 45,900 this afternoon. Barkley Dam was spilling at an average rate of 34, 400 this afternoon. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
    .
Current Conditions: The weather patterns this past week have remained about the same as we have seen for the past few weeks. We had snow and cold last weekend as well as below normal temperatures the first part of this week. The water temperatures dropped about 4 degrees with that arctic blast but have recovered to their previous levels over the past couple days with warmer than normal temperatures. Of course with these above normal temperatures we are experiencing strong winds from the south. Bass fishing has remained the same as I reported last week with the fish still scattered for the most part, numbers of smaller fish being taken with an occasional nice big fish but not numbers of them nor numbers of keepers.

The warmer weather will continue tomorrow (Friday) with a morning low of 59, afternoon high of 79 with wind SSW 15-25. Thunderstorms are in the forecast for tomorrow night and into Saturday. The morning low for Saturday is forecast to be 60, afternoon high of 66 with scattered thunderstorms and wind SSE at 16. Another cold front is coming through on Saturday night and the morning low on Sunday is forecast to be 44, afternoon high of 49 with wind W at 13. The cold continues on Monday with a morning low of 37, afternoon high of 51 with wind NW at 14. The good news is, if the extended forecast is correct, we will be seeing more seasonable temperatures in the 60's and 70's next week. Hopefully these more stable weather patterns along with the rising water will improve the bass fishing we have seen over the past number of weeks.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on main lake points and banks on crank baits, Alabama rigs, jigs and suspending jerk baits. Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 359.25 Surface Temperature - 58
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 359.10 Surface Temperature - 57

Both lakes are at summer pool. Kentucky Dam was spilling at an average rate of 121,900 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was spilling at an average rate of 48,100 this afternoon.
The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
    .

Current Conditions: The weather pattern we have been having over the past few weeks continued to plague the lakes area this past week. We continue to get a cold fronts coming through the area about every 2-3 days. We get one or two days of nice above normal temperatures and then a couple of days of well below normal temperatures. We are still getting a lot of wind with most of these fronts also. We did have one day this week on Tuesday that it actually got very warm and the wind did not blow. Yesterday it was again very warm but the wind was blowing at 20-30 with gusts to 40. The accompanied cold front came through last night and we woke up to the cold again with north winds at 15-20. Obviously we did not get on the water every day over the past week but did manage a couple of days. The bass bite still remains scattered over all with more small fish being taken than keeper plus sized fish. Example: The USA Bassin tournament last Saturday had 31 boats with no 5 fish limits weighed. 25 of those 31 boats had one fish or less. The Legacy Marine tournament last Sunday had 28 boats, of which 2 limits were weighed in and of the 28 boats, 23 boats had 2 fish or less.

What I have seen is that keeper plus sized fish are biting in the creeks and bays during the afternoon on the warm prefrontal days after the water temperatures warm up in the shallows. These fish are holding off the banks in the ditch channels off the spawning areas and moving up when the water warms up. The smaller fish are relating more to the channel banks and secondary points in the creeks and bays..

The forecast for tomorrow (Friday) is for a morning low of 35/afternoon high of 64 with wind ENE at 8. Saturday's forecast is showing a morning low of 41/afternoon high of 68 with wind E at 10. Sunday's forecast is calling for a morning low of 50/afternoon high of 59 with a 100% chance of rain and wind E at 10-15. The extended forecast thru mid next week is for daytime high's in the low 60's/night time low's around 50 with a chance of rain each day. The latter part of next week is showing more favorable temperatures in the 70's with more stable weather....I and I am sure many others are praying that this forecast is right because I and many other anglers are tired of this March weather and are ready for spring.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on creek channel banks and secondary points in the creeks and bays on Alabama rigs, jigs, Carolina and Texas rigged creature baits and crank baits. Largemouth are also being taken in the shallows in the creeks and bays on jerk baits, spinner baits, vibrating jigs and lipless crank baits as well as Texas rigged creature baits and whacky rigged worms.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Some Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and gravel bars near deep water on the main lake as well as on secondary points and gravel banks in the front halves of the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on jigs, Carolina rigged creature baits and tube jigs.

PRODUCTIVE LURES: Rapala DT 10 and DT 6 crank baits in crawdad patterns, Rapala Shad Raps in crawdad patterns, Strike King Red Eye Shad in red craw, chrome sexy shad and blue chrome, Rattle Traps in red craw and chrome shad, D&L jigs in black blue and oops patterns, Slong's jigs in black blue, Slong's spinner baits in white/chartreuse, Lucky Craft suspending jerk baits in chartreuse shad and aurora black, vibrating jigs in blue glimmer with pearl white swim bait trailer, Charmer 6" lizards in watermelon/red and green pumpkin and Yamamoto senkos rigged whacky style in variations of green pumpkin.

Crappie: Crappie are being reported as scattered also, with most of the fish still being taken in the 10-15 ft range over submerged cover by vertically fishing with minnow rigs and small jigs tipped with Crappie nibbles. These fish are still staging in the creeks and bays with an occasional few fish being taken in 8-10 ft of water on warmer afternoons with some moving even shallower on the warmer afternoons.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 361.55 Surface Temperature - 61
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 361.35 Surface Temperature - 61

Both Lakes are 2.5 feet over summer pool and on a slow draw down. Kentucky Dam was spilling at an average rate of 150,385 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was spilling at an average rate of 87,500 cfs this afternoon.
The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
    .

Current Conditions: Some big condition changes occurred since my last week's report. Heavy rains here and up river earlier this week raised the lakes to their present level. This coupled with some warmer days raised the water temperatures about 5 degrees. Those scattered and finicky bass that we have been reported for the last few weeks finally moved into the shallows and the bite has been good this week. We are catching numbers of fish right now in the flooded brush and wood cover in the creeks and bays. There are still some bass staging on secondary points and channel banks also in the creeks and bays but the shallow bite has ruled this week. The TVA has started a slow draw down this afternoon and unless something changes weather wise the slow drawdown will continue until we once again reach summer pool

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on creek channel banks and secondary points in the creeks and bays on jigs, Carolina and Texas rigged creature baits and crank baits. Largemouth are also being taken in the flooded brush and wood in the creeks and bays on spinner baits, chatter baits, jigs, Texas and Florida rigged creature baits.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Smallmouth are bedding right now on gravel banks on the main lake and in the mouths of the creeks and bays. These fish are taking jigs, Texas rigged creature baits and tube jigs.

PRODUCTIVE LURES: Rapala DT 10 and DT 6 crank baits in crawdad patterns and shad patterns, Strike King Red Eye Shad in red craw and chrome sexy shad, D&L jigs in Cumberland craw and oops patterns, Slong's jigs in black blue, Slong's spinner baits in white/chartreuse and vibrating jigs in blue glimmer and white with pearl white swim bait trailer and Charmer 6" lizards and timber pups in watermelon/red. green pumpkin/blue and green pumpkin.

Crappie: Crappie are still being reported as scattered with most of the fish still being taken in the 10-20 ft range over submerged cover by vertically fishing with minnow rigs and small jigs tipped with Crappie nibbles. These fish are still staging around the mouths of the creeks and bays with some occasional few fish being taken in shallow water on warmer afternoons on bobbers and minnows.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 359.21 Surface Temperature - 65
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.95 Surface Temperature - 65

Both lakes are at summer pool. Kentucky Dam was spilling at an average rate of 59,950 cfs this afternoon. Barkley Dam was spilling at an average rate of 67,800 cfs this afternoon.
The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
    .
Current Conditions: The lakes were drawn down 2.5 ft since my report last week. Water temperatures increased 4 degrees. We have had sunny blue skies since last Friday until today when some cloud cover and rain moved into the area with an approaching front. We also had lake wind warnings issued here the past 2 days. You can tell it is spring now with the ever changing conditions. Last week I reported the bass bite as good with the water 2.5 ft over pool and heavy cloud cover. This all changed with the water being drawn down and blue bird skies this past week. I would classify the bite this week as fair with all these changes. It is pick your pattern time now with some bass on late prespawn patterns, some bass spawning and some bass now of post spawn. We caught bass that were still yet to spawn this week as well as bass that had already spawned. I did see a number of bass on beds this week also but we did not fish them as I do not like to pull bass off their beds. We took a number of bass on the flats out in front of the brush where they had moved as a result of the dropping water levels. Numbers of bass can be taken right now but keepers in the 2-3 lb range are more scarce than the past few years. It seems when we do get a good keeper it is in the 4 plus pound range. The up side to this is that it is not hard to catch numbers of fish but difficult to catch numbers of good keeper sized bass.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is calling for a high of 79/morning low of 67 with a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Wind is forecast to be 15-20 ranging from SW in the morning to NW in the afternoon with frontal passage. Saturday's forecast is calling for a high of 72/morning low of 60 with an 80% chance of thunderstorms with light and variable winds. Sunday's forecast is calling for a high of 81/morning low of 55 with a 50% chance of afternoon thunderstorms with wind W at 5-10.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Prespawn and post spawn Largemouth are being taken on creek channel banks and secondary points as well as on flats near the spawning areas in the creeks and bays on lipless crank baits, jigs, Carolina and Texas rigged creature baits, vibrating jigs and whacky rigged worms. Largemouth are also being taken in the flooded brush and wood in the creeks and bays on jigs and Texas and Florida rigged creature baits.

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Kentucky Dam - 359.41 Surface Temperature - 70
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 359.20 Surface Temperature - 70

Both lakes are at summer pool. Kentucky Dam was generating at an average rate of 37,500 cfs this morning. Barkley Dam was generating at average rate of 29,700 cfs this morning.
The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at
    http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm
    .
Current Conditions: Well, we went from late winter conditions one month ago with snow to now summer with record and near record temperatures this week. The little bit of normal spring weather we had was short lived. As I mentioned in last week's report, we still have some bass spawning and still a few that have not spawned and some on post spawn patterns. We caught bass shallow, deep and in between this week with the bite being slow some slow days and some fair bite days. We had some hot days with blue skies and flat water and some hot days with high winds which kept us from being able to cover much water. We have lake wind warnings out again today so my clients and I made the decision to wait for more favorable conditions. Although there are still some shallow spawning fish and there will still be a few late spawners, I believe most of the bass are now on post spawn banks and points. We did manage to catch a few fish on early ledges this week also and I expect the ledge bite will picking up over the next week or so.

The weekend forecast is calling for record high temperatures in the 90's with night time low's in the 70's. This pattern is forecasted to continue into early next week. Winds are forecasted to be south quadrant. Be sure to check your latest wind forecasts before venturing on the lakes and take plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated.

Some largemouth are now being taken on early ledges on Texas rigged large worms, jigs and Carolina rigged creature baits.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and secondary points in the mouths of the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on jigs, tube jigs, Texas and Carolina rigged creature baits.

PRODUCTIVE LURES: Rapala DT 10 and DT 6 crank baits in shad and bluegill patterns, Bandit 200 and 300 series crankbaits in rootbeer and rootbeer/chartreuse, Strike King Red Eye Shad in sexy shad and chrome sexy shad, D&L jigs in Cumberland craw and oops patterns, Slong's spinner baits in blue glimmer and vibrating jigs in blue glimmer and white with pearl white swim bait trailer and Charmer 6" lizards and timber pups in watermelon/red. green pumpkin/blue and green pumpkin.

Crappie: Crappie are still being reported as scattered with most of the fish still being taken in the 10-15 ft range over submerged cover by vertically fishing with minnow rigs and small jigs tipped with Crappie nibbles. Some Crappie are being taken in 5-10 ft depths over brush piles with small jigs tipped with minnows.

Bluegill/Red Ears: Blue gills and Red Ears are now starting to spawn in the shallows. These bluegills are being taken on red worms fished under bobbers. The Red Ears are being taken on split shot rigs baited with small jigs tipped with worms slowly reeled along the bottom.

Channel Catfish: Channel Catfish are now moving up on shallow rocky banks and points on the main lake to spawn. These fish are being taken on night crawlers fished under bobbers.
