Re: Ohio River Reports Posted Here (CincyBas)

Jamie not sence I moved almost 2 yrs ago and Big Bone was my main ramp for fishing before moving...this time of year most of the guys will run to the creeks, but I found better luck staying outside at the mouth of creeks. If you do go back in the creeks, do not go so far back that the shad are chasing the shinners, or go back as far as you can, another words the middle of the creeks I never had much luck with this time of year always way back in them or out at the mouths, but most of my good fish this time of year where on the main river.
Not sure how much the river has changed sence I left but when you run out of Big Boone trun righ (up river) and go to the power plant, across from the power plant and little down stream is a big flat, also across from the power plant is a small creek THAT used to have a big log jam on it which was fun to fish. Sorry can not help you anymore than that but the river changes every year. Good luck, Oh how did ya do at Kincaid?

Ed thanks for the input on Big Bone. I think we are trying to decide how far to run to get away from some of the boats. I think I might know the the area you are talking about across from the power plant. Its a flat with a lot of wood on it. I fished their about a month ago. Your rite theirs a lot of fish there!

I posted a report on Kincaid on this board. It was tough for keepers. We couldn't get through the dinks.

I'll report how I do this weekend on the Big "B".

Also just before you get to Markland Dam there is a big creek on the left side after you go under the hwy, on the right side is one of the Casinos.
That is a good place to fish as well, but everyone knows it is

Re: Ohio River Reports Posted Here (CincyBas)

Launched at Duffy's Landing at 4pm and fished until 7pm. Took the wife with me for moral support. After we hit a barge wake that soaked us the moral support went out the window. She was a good sport, but I have never seen so much weekend barge traffic.

Ran to Cox's Park ramp and fished around it to start out and caught a suager on the first cast with a crankbait. Shad are everywhere.

Hit a spot going into a marina where current was rushing in past some riprap. literally caught a fish on every cast with a Bagley's shallow runner. Small in a shad pattern with a chartruese back was the ticket. These were whites mixed with Largemouth. Caught more whites than LM and caught the whites further of the riprap. Probably caught 30 fish on this spot.

Caught several small LM, some over the 12 inch limit but most smaller. Lots of agressively feeding fish out there right now.

Fished the pool between Newburgh and Uniontown Dams Sunday near Henderson. We caught somewhere between 50-60 mostly largemouth on shad imitation crankbaits around current breaks and mouth of creeks. Only had three keepers though. But they were aggressive and fat with shad.
I heard from friends that sauger were starting to bite at Newburgh dam.

    Licking River 8-3-07 pm

Fished the Licking River in Campbell Co. There was a little bit of current but not much. Rode for 23 minutes to the first riffle, had to get out and drag the boat through and then fished the next riffle. Caught 4 smallmouth, 2 keepers, one spot 10" and caught 3 sauger, 2 were around 14" the other a cigar. Fishing was slow. I caught my smallmouth on a 2.5" yum craw on a 1/8 oz jighead and on a rebel craw crankbait. The sauger were caught on shakeyhead watermelon worm and rebel wee r chrome/black crankbaite. River is about 2' low and loaded with small shad everywhere. Water temps 82, water clarity 1-2'. Fishing was slow. There were 1-2" shad everywhere.

Reading this post reminds me of the time I was waaaay up Skaggs Creek on Barren and did the same thing. You should have seen the look on a guys face that was wading the same hole of water. When I went buy him I had the trolling motor down and was fishing. He ask just how far upstream can you take that boat. My reply... if there is 1ft of water and the riffle is not to long I jump out and drag The next riffle had 1ft of water but instead of a gravel bottom it was chunk rock that was the end of the line.

No wading shoes in my boat, just an old pair of basketball shoes that work fine.
    The water was like bathwater!
My son fished the same riffle Monday pm and caught 4 smallies, all around 10-11" and a 2.5 foot gar. Cooler temps will start to turn the bigger fish on later.

    Licking River 8-18-07 pm

Fished the Licking River in Campbell County. My son and I caught around 60 sauger and whitebass fishing a riffle area Saturday evening. They were all small 4-8". Caught 2 bass around 10" they were Kentuckies. Caught all of our fish on small shad color cb and rebel teeny craws. Just no bigger fish to be caught. Lots of shad poppin everywhere. The water temps had dropped some. River is still about 2' low. Cooler temps and some rain will add current and the bigger fish will move up into the shallow areas. Had fun! Must have had a good spawn this spring.

Re: Ohio River Reports Posted Here (mikedaleo)

our small club had a tourney on the ohio, put in at the greenup ramp. 7 lb and 4 oz won, 5 lb 9 oz took second and 3 lb 9 oz took third. big fish was 2 lb 13 oz. In talking to the guys most of the fish were taken on either a small buzz bait or plastic worms. The key to find fish was areas that contained weeds w/wood and watch for the bait fish. Where ever the bait fish were we found bass, most of the fish were small but the bait fish seemed to be the key.

    Ohio River 10-19

Went fishing last Friday on the Big O below Meldahl Dam. Got there before daylight. Right at daylight, the shad started poppin and I was on them. I caught 20 sauger in ten minutes, almost every cast. My brother caught at least 10 with a few white bass mixed in. As soon as the sun came up it was over. Jigged some spoons for a while and we caught about 20 more sauger. We kept 15 sauger and 10 whitebass, no stripers. Also caught a drum around 3lbs and a gar. Caught 2 smallies, one went 16". Fish were caught on hard jerkbaits, shallow diving cb and hopkins spoons. Had a blast! No topwater bite. Water temps 70-72, water clear to 2'.

Fished the Big O. Put in at 5:00. Started below Meldahl dam jigging spoons in 24-38' of water. Caught 12 sauger, 4 keepers over 14" and one nice crappie, 11". As dusk approached shad were poppin everywhere. Started hitting the banks with med crankbait and a hard jerkbait. Started catching white bass, around 20 and more sauger, 10 nice keepers. Caught 2 nice smallmouth, both over 18", both over 3lbs apiece. Overall a very good day. Water temps were 62-63. Clarity 1-2 feet. Some current but not much.
    Good Fishing

He Dave, that sounds like a great day fishing. I'm new to the Ohio river fishing and haven't done much good. Never tried to catch sauger though. Where is Meldah dam? I live near big bone and put in there.

Thanks for the post and info

Re: Ohio River 11-1 (Dave Ervin)

Fished below the Greenup Dam last 2 Saturdays, last week we caught 2 small mouth and 8 largemouth. Most were caught on a bandit crank baits, white and crawfish colors worked well, some were taken on surface lures. Fished there on Saturday 11-1, did not catch any bass, pardner caught 2 sauger on a small crank bait. Talked to several fishermen today, lots of small sauger were being caught on live minnows, Got one report from a gentleman who fished early this morning and caught 5 hybrids, largest being around 10 pounds, he stated he was fishing in the swift water below the dam. Water temp was 61
