Re: Texas Rig: Your rod/reel/line setup (T-RIG)

I don't Texas rig a lot, but when I do I use my spider jig rod:

Custom Rogue MB664 blank, split rear grip, no fore grip, spiral wrapped Fuji guides.

Reel is Daiwa Advantage with 10# fluorocarbon line

Re: Texas Rig: Your rod/reel/line setup (T-RIG)

I usually have four Texas rig rods in the boat. I suppose I could get by with only one or two but each one is set up for a specific task. All of these rods are fitted with Pfleuger President reels.

    1) 6'6" St. Croix Premier medium power, fast action rod with 10# McCoy's clear blue fluorescent line for finesse baits. I know that some folks will argue that a medium or medium-heavy spinning rod would be better for this application, but I just don't really care for them for some reason. I suppose it's because I very rarely use one, I'm terribly inaccurate with it, and I'm just flat not comfortable with spinning tackle.

    2) 6'6" St. Croix Legend Tournament medium-heavy, fast action rod with 15# McCoy's clear blue fluorescent line for "regular" 7" worms, Baby Brush Hogs, etc.

    3) 7' St. Croix Avid medium-heavy, fast action rod with either 15# or 20# McCoy's clear blue fluorescent line for 10" worms, big lizards, Brush Hogs, etc. This setup also doubles as my "big jig" rod and my pitching/flipping combo for those rare times when I use these techniques. I will, however, spool this setup with 50 or 65 pound braid for the few times each year that I go to Guntersville.

    4) 6"6" G.Loomis medium-heavy, fast action rod with 12# McCoy's clear blue fluorescent line for just about everything else, including tubes. G.Loomis and St Croix rods are rated a little differently and it's difficult to make a direct comparison as far as power-ratings are concerned. Even though this rod is listed as a medium-heavy, it feels and fishes more like a medium power St. Croix rod.

Most people would probably say that the G.Loomis is the king of the stable but, believe it or not, my most favorite rods to use in this list are the first two. I don't have one but if I was looking for a decent worm rod that won't break the bank, I'd seriously look at either a medium or medium-heavy power, fast action rod in the new St. Croix Premier line.
