    Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement..

    Better get started...

    In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. This requirement does not apply to law enforcement officers while engaged in their official duties. The requirement for boating safety education is phased-in over several years and applies to all PWC operators and operators of motorboats of 10hp and greater according to the following schedule:

    PWC operators 20 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2009;
    PWC operators 35 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2010;
    PWC operators 50 years of age or younger and motorboat operators 20 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2011;
    All PWC operators, regardless of age, and motorboat operators 30 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2012;
    Motorboat operators 40 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2013;
    Motorboat operators 45 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2014;
    Motorboat operators 50 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2015;
    All motorboat operators,regardless of age,shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2016.

    If you own a stroker or any boat that goes over 90 you must have a private pilots license as well.

    They made it for 10 hp and up and it should be for ALL watercraft....even canoes ....safety needs to be used even when it is lower hp or self propelled in my opinnion.

    Pretty irresponsible for anyone operating a high performance boat not to have already taken one actually, regardless of how long you've been operating a boat.

    Just my 2 cents but there ought to be exceptions! I am qualified to drive a 509 ft warship but if I dont have this class I cant drive my 17 ft bassboat in a few years.

    Some on here might agree and some might not but certain rates in the Navy and Coast Guard require you to know the rules of the road (inland and international) like the back of your hand, I happen to have spent the last 20 years doing just that. I think that should count for something!

    Just another attempt by the common wealth to make more money, they will probably charge $20 or more for the class.

    There are on line certifications that are free and the state will accept.

    Re: Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement.. (TRCM)

    There are several online courses that are acceptable for the requirements of the new impending requirements posed by the Commonwealth. One example is the Boat U.S. on line safety course.

    Other options listed by the USCG include:

    Oh, and cantgetright, I know people in the hills talk slow, but Commonwealth is one word.

    Re: Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement.. (TRCM)

    Be careful taking the one from American Boat Operators. Their test and info is wrong regarding the weight requirement for trailer brakes .
    I emailed them about it, but who knows what they will say or do. In VA, 3000 lbs requires trailer brakes. I answered that correctly, but the test said I was wrong and that it is 5000 lbs.

    I sent them a link to the VA State Police showing the 3000 lb requirement.

    And be prepared to spend 5 or 6 hrs taking it....it has time delays in it which are way more than are needed. You can't just flip thru it and take the test.

    Re: Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement.. (herndonpro)

    BPS gives these classes free every week or so.

    Well, go to the VDGIF website above, click on the classroom link in the second sentence on the first page, then put in your location at the top of the 2nd page, and it will list when & where

    I am still checking on MWR from the base

    what gets me about that...is when this all first surfaced VA "did" accept the BoatersUS online course...I took it and have my certificate.....so does Lea.....you'd think they'd honor it if it was taken during that time.....

    It was "State Specific" to Virginia and it says this on the certificate:

    The On-line Boating Safety Course is approved by the National Association of
    Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the United States Coast Guard

    which is what the VDGIF requires......I'm not taking another course until a GW stops me, sees my certificate and says it's not adequate....then I'm writing VDGIF!
