Fly into San Francisco, Sacramento, or Arcata. They are worth seeing, just like any great biome in the world.

I live one hour from Yosemite and haven't been in probably 20 years. Getting way too over populated and while it is beautiful scenery, I find more enjoyment going to a lake and fishing. You will enjoy your trip and everything there is to offer along the way. Be sure to wave at all the homeless folks rearranging their homes along the freeways and offramps. They are everywhere and our idiot allows it.

    Enjoy your trip.

We’ve done it twice. Muir Woods just north of golden state bridge. And Henry Cowell Park near Monterrey. Both were great experiences and I’m not sure which I’d say is better. Muir had a longer walking trail, but I think Cowell had some cooler historical monument stuff.

SFO just across the Golden Gate then down to the coast line to Muir Woods. Amazing to see, it's hard to comprehend how tall those things are.

Son headed to his new duty station in Tacoma very soon and Redwood is on my bucket list!
If professionals who's careers depend on catching fish use FFS then that's what I'm using. Might be too simple of a philosophy but makes sense to me.

Sacramento (SMF) is an easy airport to fly into and out of. Go to Yosemite and you will be gobsmacked.

When you get out there depending on how much time you have:

A friend and I rode our motorcycles out to California in 2012, great trip

On your drive to Redwoods NP don't take the 101 all the way, break off the 101 onto Mattole Road. Mattole Road runs what is called the Lost Coast and is a pretty drive. If you spend the night in Ferndale, Ca (it's a Victorian town) be sure to have breakfast at Poppa Joe's, I'm guessing the regulars are still gambling (cards and dice) before they eat. Ferndale is about 1 1/2 hours south of Redwoods. If you want to do Humboldt Redwoods State Park, then stay on 101.

Several years ago, we flew into Sacramento. Drove to Redding and spent night. Went to Shasta Dam and then drove to Eureka area (from memory). We stayed at a casino (good room at lower price). We drove to Redwood National Forest for a couple days. Redwood National Forest is incredible.

Then looped down the coast for a while. Saw Clear Lake and cut back across toward Sacramento. Saw lots of scenery, almond groves, and smaller cities. Drove car thru one of the tourist trees toward Mendocino.

We spent about 5 days. We went in November and it was crowded but not bad. I would not do the trip during summer when the crowds are larger. We saw seals off the coast and elk in many areas.

I would love to go to Yosemite also.

There is a bit less crowded area of Redwoods, generally speaking. Fly into Medford, Oregon (via Portland or Seattle airports) and drive to Crescent City, CA (not far, 2hrs or so). Visit the Stout Grove and Den of Titans and visit Jedediah Smith State Park. These areas receive much less traffic than areas further South, closer to the Bay Area. They also contain some of the largest and oldest trees in the Redwoods (and world!). I’m a God fearing man and not some hippy dippy type, but I must say, walking amongst these groves of trees (without large crowds) that stood when Jesus walked the earth is a very spiritual experience. Utterly amazing and hard to explain. Just make sure you lock your car and be aware everywhere you go in the towns in these areas…they are all, sadly, overrun with homeless drug addicted zombies.

Traveled all over the west in my last job and I once did a trip from Sacramento to Redding to McKinleyville and back down the 101 to San Fran. On my way back down I saw this exit for "road of giants" I had some time so I took the detour. It is through the redwoods with the turquoise Eel river below and I was completely blown away, it is one of the most prettiest drives I have been on. Northern Cali is incredible but I will say that the people are out there. I remember I stopped at a very small town between Redding and Mckinleyville and it was so remote and I thought to myself if I was ever on the run this is where I would go. Three years later that teacher that kidnapped that girl from TN was found about 20 minutes from that town.

I’d fly into Sacramento or Oakland. They are smaller airports and easier to get in/out vs San Francisco.

Agree. Kind of like this one in Big Basin State Park.
