Where the Early Elite Fishermen More Rugged?

Seems to be that the early BASS hero’s like Roland Martin, Tom Mann , Hank Parker and Jimmy Houston were more manly then today’s elite who whine about everything.
They found fish with flashers not FFS.
They studied ToPo maps and used triangulation to find and mark spots not GPS
They had 60 lb thrust trolling motors not 113 lb spot lock.
They had regular anchors not Power poles
They had to fight big water in 17 foot boats not 21 foot barges
They had coanglers , not marshals that don’t share the water with them
I could go on and on but today’s elites are soft and don’t have the basic skills their predecessors had.

To be fair I also have heard stories of during early BASS tournament practices guys would skip if it was too rainy / windy. They also had some guys in the field that were more or less clueless and didn't have access to fishing information / education, and the financial investment required to fish wasn't quite as insane.

A lot of the old guard whined too. You just didn't have social media to broadcast it on.

He'll look at how many older guys rant and rave on here.

That’s a fact. Fish were dumb back in the day.

I feel like they would be somewhere between walleye fishermen and catfish fishermen. Definitely more rugged than crappie guys, though.

Jimmy Houston's hairstyle alone sets bass fishermen back on the scale of ruggedness by a fair amount.

Send this new crowd across Lake Ontario in a 17.5 ft boat with a carburated150, mechanical steering, no hot foot, tempress seats, 2 flashers, no gps, etc, and get back to me with who is rugged.

I have fished a lot of club tourneys thru the years and been a co in a lot of Opens and Bfl's. The old guard was good but the new guard with FFS is better with less time expended . The new guys can flat out catch them with the new technology. Embrace or bow out. This is my next path. Looking forward to going where I want when I want no hard feelings. I have FFS just not my cup of tea. To me new technology crew equals LIV tour in golf. Money is all that matters. Give me 3.6 million and a Masters win vs 30 million and 54 holes of prancing around in shorts with no one in the crowd to watch.

This is true. Back in the 90’s I fished a few Citgo top 150 BASS tournaments as a co angler. Believe me I heard moaning, groaning and complaining more than you can imagine.
