    Big Hair Jigs

Interested in using them in water from 6' to 12'. Any suggestions on size, tackle set up, brands, or basic retrieves would be appreciated. Just looking for a place to start.

Baitcasting rod and reel.. I use 12-15 lb floro depending on water clarity. In that shallow of water, you really don't need a very heavy hair jig.. 3/8 - 1/2 oz, maybe less. As said above, I impart most of my action with the reel very quick cadence of handle turns with a HIGH speed reel, then allowing it to either fall or pendulum back to you at the depth they are at... you really aren't fishing the bottom. Just trying to impulse fish suspended off the bottom.. Best suited when they are suspended just off a drop. Good way to get inactive fish to bite, especially if in schools. Have figured out since getting FFS, that they really want it above them... Usually will show very little interest once it gets below their depth level.

I tie preacher jigs (hair with a chicken feather). 1/2 oz to 3/8 oz. It works when it works.

The OG was a 3/8 oz jig with 8” deer hair that we called “The Hair” which was thrown on a Lews SG1 or SG4 5’-6” pistol grip, ABU 1500 reel and 8 lb line. No one else could find the 8” hair, so the “Preacher” version used the chicken feathers to extend the length. A 1/2 or 5/8 oz jig on 12 lb line would be a good place to start.

First two pictures are brush head jig 1/4oz.
Second pictures a arkie head jig 1/4oz.
Last single picture bullet head jig 1/4oz.
I dont use glue when I tie my bucktail in when I add either silicone or round rubber I wrap and lock the thread in and it hold both bucktail and silicone or rou rubber in place. I also dont use glue on the thread when tying straight bucktail jigs also.

Basshunter,I tie a few jigs and feather hooks too but I use glue to seal the thread. Any particular reason that you don’t? Thanks.

I started tying around 2017. I was always on the hunt for different hair. I was working the paint desk at Home Depot when a guy walks in wearing a V-neck shirt. He had more hair sticking out above the V then most old dudes like me have on their heads. First thing that popped into my head was I bet I could get 5 jigs worth of hair with one scissor swipe.

The way I tie the buck tail down with the upholstery thread then adding either silicone or the round rubber skirting material lock everything in place with a series of wraps 5 and 3 half hatch knots. I also modify the jig collar so it lock al materials in place when tying and after.skirt material will never fail. I've been no glue needed. Only then I use epoxy glue on is before I tie any of my jig head I glue the weed guards in place and be done with it.

3/8 oz. Black & red with a ruby red swimmin chunk is awesome in summer here for big smallmouth on bright moon lit nights.

Spro Phat fly is a good looking hair jig.
I have not seen the new 6th Sense Flock hair jig, but it looks nice in the pictures.
