    Felt Washers on Battery Posts

Do you guys use felt washers on battery posts on your car or boat batteries? Do they really help from corrosion?

I would think on a boat they would just attract and hold moisture.

I've seen guys coat the washers in grease then put them on the battery to help fight corrosion. I haven't had good results with the washers.

Some are treated with a substance that seems to work.
Have tried with and without the treatment and there is a difference.

The reason merchants push these is because they carry about 80 points of margin. Likewise the grease they hawk to prevent corrosion. My wife had a new battery installed several weeks ago and I noticed the felt pads and grease on the post. Yep they got me on that one.

Sold batteries for 31 years when i had my auto repair shop. Everyone got free felt washers. Was easier than dealing with the corrosion that was sure to happen.

Nope. But I do put dielectric grease on them and 100% helps.

I just use petroleum jelly. A light coating will last as long as the battery will.

On my vehicles I use CRC (red spray) and the felt washers. On the boat, I don't use them at all.

Learned from my Grandpa who was a Military / Farm vehicle technician that any motor vehicle that is constantly pulsed by the alternator should have this. The constant pulse created some kind of electrolysis from the moisture in the air and the lead on the battery studs. With marine batteries, they are not used long enough to create this electric field / pull to warrant it.

Not sure if it's true, but I've had great luck with batteries living well past their life expectancy following this.
Been fishin' since I was 5 years old...Thanks Grandpa!
