There are a couple-styles of Upper Exhaust Strainers out there for V6/V8 Fourstroke Product. Most of them are quite simple to remove, clean and reinstall.

Item #19 denotes the two different types of primary strainer:
Item # 18 above denotes the TUBLULAR type of strainer- simply remove the HOSE (#15)
and then pull the strainer out of the nipple the hose attached to.
If there is a bolt in #19 as referenced in the right-side of the above image, the strainer is a basket-style and requires removal of at least one bolt:
Remove the hose, the ONE bolt (8mm head), and then extract the basket-style strainer for cleaning:
The YELLOW "Twist-out" strainer is quite simple to clean:
ALL of these strainers should be cleaned as part of your regular ANNUAL or 100hr Maintenance: MORE OFTEN IF RUNNING IN DEBRIS LADEN WATER AREAS.
