Knocking sound ??

I have a 2008 pro xs was at the lake fished all day on the way coming in heard a knocking shut the motor down recrank and headed to boat ramp never had an alarm everything on smartcraft looked good no loss of power
Could it be lower unit or motor? Two days later no oil leaks on either no metal the compressor turns freely with no noise , turned motor by hand prop shaft turned with some noise my question is , is there someway to check for sure if it is motor or lower unit before taking to dealer?
