The DOT here is staging emergency vehicles up and down the main routes headed north. Totality is about 30min north of here and they’re predicting hundreds of thousands of tourists coming in. Utica is 15min away and the closest city to the mountains (some here would call it a “small town”) in this area. It kind of acts like the starting point to head to north to the ADKs between Albany and Syracuse so the route north is one of the main tourist corridors. Add in the traffic from Utica hosting the IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship (I think 16 different countries) and traffic is going to be a nightmare tomorrow.

I live in the path of the last one that happened a few years ago. I would say the SOE is due to the traffic jam that is about to occur. Nobody was going anywhere when it happened here. Idiots just parked in the middle of the road and got out of their cars. Do not underestimate the amount of stupid that is going to happen.

That's exactly right. There are some counties in extreme southeastern Oklahoma that also declared states of emergency because of the expected thousands and thousands of out-of-state visitors coming to be in the path of totality. Some of those small towns will have their resources completely drained by that amount of people filling up their tanks for their return trips, buying food, not to mention a lot of secondary roads and small highways that will be backed up because they don't normally get that kind of traffic.
