Did they ever work the bugs out? If so, does anyone have the "buy after this date" advice?
So let's hear the good, the bad and ugly.

I think motorguide is years behind the rest of the trolling motors, it’s almost like they just gave up, right now they would be the last on my list to consider
.
I wouldn’t say that. Both mine have worked as they are supposed to and are easy to see over when running down the lake. A lot of people that bad mouth them have never owned one. Like All the brands there have been some issues, which for the price of any of them there shouldn’t be any. That goes for outboard motors too. The Tour Pro 36v weighs 62 lbs.
They don’t have a brushless motor! Nuff said!

I've had one for a couple years now and I'm very happy with it. Not going to bash any brand as I think they all have good and bad and the new additions from some brands that have brushless motors are likely the future. That said, my reason for buying a MG was that it is still a cable steer motor and had no chance of leaving me unable to use it, other than the normal failure points we've had with TM's over many years. At least initially, no other brand could say that and may cannot still. Both my kids fished a lot of high school tournaments and I could not afford to get to one and have the TM decide not to work, again, other than the normal risks we've dealt with for years. To be fair, I had a lot of trouble with mine and the spotlock until MG issued a software update that fixed the wander and it just up and going wild on occasion. After this update, it's been perfect.
Buy what you like and if you get an MG, know that it's not necessarily the cutting edge, but, it's not the bleeding edge either. It's a solid unit, will not leave you dead in the water due to a steering mechanism failure (again, unless you break a cable) and it's also less expensive in most cases. If you buy one now, it'll be fine and if you want additional info, head over to the Electrical/Wiring/Trolling Motors forum and read through some of the posts there. Then make your decision.

Don't waste your money!!! I won't even post all the issues I had with mine. There was a 30 page thread a couple years ago listing the various issues and "fixes" for them in the trolling motor forum.
My last MotorGuide was awesome. Seriously fantastic—in 1994.
A guy in our club has one, says its never gave him an ounce of trouble
I’ve had mine for 3 years and havent had one problem. I love it.

I've had mine for two years and it's been trouble free. As with anything YMMV.

I bought an extra tour when they quit making the good ones years ago. Still running those 2, but I think when I have to get a new one it won't be MG.
I had an x3 on my old boat. I much prefer that over the maxxum I have now.

Great motor smooth quite no problems going on three years.
I’ve got one of the first Tour Pros to ship and its been flawless.
It is hands down to nicest steering spot lock trolling motor out there.
Way quieter and smoother than an ultrex,
plus the latest update adds a host of features including full unassisted cable steer like the og Fortrex.
