    Glide Baits and split rings

Does everyone use a split ring on their glidebaits? I am new to this technique and was curious about if most people do a direct tie or add a split ring.

I always use a split ring or a heavy duty snap. I feel that the added freedom really brings a glide bait to life.

You're limiting action tying direct. I use the decoy egg snaps. Size 4 (90lbs) for glides under 6oz. Size 5 (120lbs) for glides over 6oz. After I've opened that snap several times or a couple trips I throw it away and go to a new one.

The Decoy Egg Ring is another very good option if you have any heartburn regarding snaps. I have used both without any problems.

Talked with Pat Schlapper about these last fall. He said what a lot of the elite series guys are doing are using the decoy egg snaps but not using them to change out baits. They leave one on each glide and tie to that.

My rule of thumb is I fish it how the builder sends it. That to me is how they intended it to be swam.

I have a lot of glide baits that don’t have great action without a split ring so I use one most of the time. I use the heavy duty ones from Swimbait Underground.

No split ring, I run a heavy crankbait snap. Looks like the decoy but slightly different.

Owner split rings on some, others direct tie. As mentioned above, if it comes with one I'll use it, if not then just direct tie.

Gotta be a little careful about that though. Some of the custom glide makers will tell you they don't ship with a snap or ring because they know most big bait throws prefer their own certain one. So their bait doesn't come with one but it's absolutely supposed to have one

Heavy snap if I want more side to side distance... direct if I want a tighter glide.
