Smaller gauges with the same load are more prone to pattern stringing. 20 gauge likely means lighter gun at the expense of more recoil.

In lead shot, it makes a difference as per above—the length of the shot column in the bore deforms the shot worse, which results in a poorer pattern as the deformed shot becomes flyers that drop out of the pattern. In steel or tungsten it makes much less difference because the shot doesnt deform.
