    250 ProXB question

Buddy got a free boat. It has a ProXB. 2 cylinders are low per a mechanic none of the locals have ever heard. He looked it up on Merc website and said it had 2 powerheads and a lu already so it's not worth putting money into it. Kid who has the boat is bummed. But all us older guys are saying A) go to a reputable shop. B) a powerhead and lu is bolted on and meant to be replaced as needed... are we crazy? Has basically no money in the boat and a rebuild or new powerhead while still costly, when comparing that to the value of the boat once done is pretty small. He's got the mechanic's words in his head and wants to buy a used motor. Any sage advice?

Heck I’d keep the engine I’d buy if it if he decided to sell

That's a great motor, put a power head on it or have that one rebuilt. You can save money if you remove the powerhead yourself, it's not that difficult to do.

Those engines were quite durable, and one of the strongest 250's Merc ever built (most were in the high 270's right off the line).

Known for passing ALMOST anything... except for a fuel tanker.
