    Top water bite question

How cold of water before you don't throw a too water? Water was mid 40s and this fish smashed a hollow bodied frog.

Nice! I have heard of folks slow rolling buzz baits in low 50's.
Just be kind to one another. It really is that simple.

Usually 60 degrees. Definitely 55 degrees is the lowest I go with a topwater.

I have caught fish on a buzzbait in the mid to low 50s. Much below that I have never tried topwater.

In my state, I have never found it successful under 62°. But I always try almost 90% of the time I'm on the water.

I've caught fish on a small wooden topwater in my Dad's pond when there was ice covering part of it. There was a drain at the shallow end where warmer water was pouring in from a winter rain. The fish there would eat that topwater bait.

They’ll hit it year round here as long as it isn’t stupid cold out in my experience. But I normally stop throwing top water regularly when the water gets in the 50s.

58 degrees is my magic number. Not to say that I won’t throw it a few degrees lower in the right situation.

    No, not for me, anyway.

It has more to do with the position of the fish than anything. 55 degrees is a benchmark temperature in pre-spawn smallmouth movement and seasonal progression.

55 and rising, it's on with topwater. 55 and falling from 57 or 58 or more, put the topwaters away, and put on a hair jig.

Depends on if it is spring or fall. In the spring I usually don't throw them until the water temp is in the low 60s in the fall, all the way down to the low 50s can be a good bite.

Not exactly top water but I remember Baisil Bacon waking a big blade spinnerbait when it was snowing.

Caught a few 55-58. But not enough to count on a bunch. 60 gets more consistent. Caught topwater fish February- November. Stripers year round

I'm usually not picking up a topwater until post spawn. Having said that, I have buddies that beat them up on buzzbaits when the water is still in the upper 40's to low 50's.

I never have any luck with topwater when water temps are below 65, so I stopped fishing that way.

This time of year it depends on weather not water temp if on a warming trend I'll throw topwater because fish are usually moving up shallow.

I’ve caught them in 47 degree water on LOZ with spooks, buzzbait and ploppers
