It's my understanding Coast Guard requires you have 28 seconds (minimum) of Areal Flares and another 3 minutes of hand held signal be it flare or light

I'm always amazed at how people try to spend as little as possible on safety equipment
But 500 on a rod or 300 on a reel is no big deal

I keep 84 seconds of current flares as well as another 56 seconds of expired flares
three high powered strobe lights (1 on each vest) 1 in the flare kit
1 Hand held orange smoker for daytime
    whistle, mirror and flag

On top of all that I have 2 PLB's w/gps 1 in my vest and 1 in the kit

My skinny little a$$ is coming home alive dammit

What makes you assume I am spending as "little as possible" on safety equipment?

Simply making sure I am in compliance seeing that I am 3+ hours away and have never fished ontario waters on St. Clair. Seemed like the right place to ask a question...

Page 16 describes the requirements, you can use pyrotechnics but they are not required.

    Smally

The device you have purchased is an Electronic Visual Distress Signal Device or (eVDSD)

And as stated on page 17 of the regulations MI bassassassin linked too says that a (eVDSD) is for night use only

You will still be required to have Visual Distress Signals that are acceptable for day time use

Its also required that your (eVDSD) Must be marked with an indication that it meets U.S. Coast Guard requirements in 46 CFR 161.013 or Must be marked with an indication it meets RTCM Std. 13200.0 for an eVDSD, Night Visual Distress Signal for Boats. For Emergency Use Only. USCG accepted for nighttime distress signal per 33 CFR 175.130 by CG-ENG Policy Letter 03-18.
