    .410 Pump Shotgun?

I remember back in the day buying a Mossberg 410 pump for $99.99. Now they are $499.00! I can buy a Mossberg Silver Reserve OU for $100 more. What other 410 pump options are there available in the pump to use for dog training/hunting that doesn't cost $500?

With the price of 410 ammo the last time I ever looked (long time ago) I would never even consider buying one.

Yeah ammo. Let is ridiculous but if you load your own go for it. $400-500 for a us made pump is about right these days. The other gun mentioned is cheap because it is made in turkey.

I would suggest an 870 as well but I cannot imagine you will find one cheaper than a mossy.

I primarily need a 410 as I have a Brittany pup that I would like to train/shoot over until she gets older and then the gauge won't matter. Will be shooting quail and pigeons over her for the first year and a 12 gauge would be a bit too much.

Start reloading unless the very expensive 410 ammo is no big deal to ya.

$17 a box is what it is local. Winchester 2-1/2" 7 shot. It is double what 12 gauge is but it is a better gauge to use for getting a dog trained for the 1st year.

Your best bet might be to find one at a pawn shop. Even the cheapest new pumps are over $200.

I had no problem training my Lab just using a 12 gauge with 3" shells. If you think $17 is a lot look up 3" and 3.5" Steel shot or for sticker shock Bismuth shot. Many over $50 per box.

410 ammo is very expensive, no matter what the shot is made of.

I think I would look for an alternative source to go bang when training the dog. Maybe use a black powder gun with no projectile.

I bought some Federal TSS 20 gauge turkey loads last spring. $13 a shot. They do pattern fantastic. Didn’t get an opportunity at a turkey so can’t comment on performance.

Hatfield makes a pump 410 that is reasonable on price.

I’ve trained a lot of pointing dogs with a 20 gauge, including a couple of Brittanys. Start with a 22 shooting blanks. The blanks can be bought in short or long rifle. I think you can use 22 cal shot charges for nail guns as blanks are sometimes hard to find.

Sounds like you got your mind made up on using .410 ammo to train. If your open to new ideas, do a little research on other methods to introduce a pup to gun fire. There's lots out there to generate new ideas for a lot less money. Even a .410 used the wrong way can ruin a good gun dog pup.

My dad bought a Mossberg 410 pump many years ago and now I have it. I'm going to hand it down to my grandson when he's old enough to hunt. Shells are expensive but you can find some deals on ammoseek. I'm not sure if any other options for a 410 pump. Most are single shot or double barrel.

I work the hunting department at the local Cabela's.
    We've had 3 cases of bird-shot 410 in since October. (30 boxes)
$20.00 a box, and it sits on the shelf for about 15 minutes until it's gone.

It manages to sit on the shelf around me at my local Academy and Walmart for a little longer. I seen a few boxes of the 2-1/2" #7-1/2 at Walmart yesterday.

Get the dog used to a 22LdR. Start out with short then subsonic then standard velocity then mini mags. After that ease into a 20 gauge.
