    Sodus Bay

How is Sodus Bay for smallmouth? Does it have the same closed season in May and June like up near the SLR? If it does, how is the fishing in the fall?

Sodus has a decent amount of smallmouth in the spring and becomes mostly a largemouth fishery as the year progresses. It’s not restricted by the same regs as the St Lawrence. Ontario is off limits beginning at the Oswego/Jefferson County line and impacts everything North up through the st Lawrence. So you could actually fish Lake Ontario from Sandy Pond south towards Mexico bay all year long.

My family had a camp on Little Sodus bay from about 2004 to 2011. we try to go back there every Victoria day weekend. Last time we hit it just right to where the smallies were on beds and we could sight fish for them. The year before it was a warmer spring and the largemouth were up shallow. Average LM was around 4lbs, a few this size came in the boat as well

The Bay proper is much more of a LM fishery, but just outside into Lake Ontario both east and west, can be fabulous that time of year. Yes it's still catch and release until June 14th, but not off limits like St Lawrence and Jefferson County.
