The Rapala DT Fat comes to mind, 1 in particular. I used to throw both the 1 and the 3 a lot and loved them. I don't even know if they still make them anymore with the BX cranks though.

I have a tons of deep divers that will run super shallow if you reel slow, not even that slow. The Balsa ones are the best at it.

May be a lot of truth to older versions being better but could be we as fishermen tend to think back on all the good trips and forget about the bad trips. Fishing WAS easier long ago. Just hard to believe manufacturers are currently churning out inferior baits in every case. But maybe so.

Brian B’s made one that is close to a wake bait. Not sure if they are still in business or if the name is correct.

I would never sell my older Baby 1 minus. Never caught a fish on the newer ones. Just something about them. Shallowest running bait I’ve ever thrown.

There are plenty of "wakebaits" that can swim under the surface depending on line size/type and angle of retrieve like putting the rod tip down to run deeper and up to run shallower.

I used to throw the baby 1 minus a lot but haven't in a few years. I have kind of just taken a normal squarebill and held my rod tip high to shallow the dive up a little bit.

I typically like the clear/ghost delta/Fire craw colors. I discovered square bill bites a couple years ago using a R2S IM squarebill. I have yet to try going very shallow over grass etc.

By the way is that a bandit 100 below the Bomber A’s in my pics above?

This is the bait that put square bills on the map for me:

And these are all baits I have yet to try:

I just ordered a couple of the baby 1 minus.

I use to use those Bombers in the bigger size when they first came out and did really well at the Delta and Clear Lake. The only thing is they would fill with water. Talked to someone at Bomber about it and they sent me three of each color they made. They worked great until they filled with water. Leakage was from around the bill. They don't make the Bigger ones anymore.

Wonder if the leak is the reason they discontinued making that bait?

One more I'll add is the Strike King KVD HC Shallow. Probably won't run as shallow as a baby 1 minus, but still a pretty good bait.

Before the grass tops out around here in the late spring, I ALWAYS have a Baby -1 tied on.
