    Dual purpose AGM question

So looking at a few different brands, some say pure lead and the cheaper ones don’t. Also the more expensive pure lead ones are a little heavier….talking group 31 size here. Interstate for example has 2 agm group 31’s. One is a good bit cheaper than the other and the more expensive one says “pure lead”. I assume the cheaper and slightly lighter ones are not made of pure lead. Would the pure lead last longer?….they have a longer warranty. If they don’t use pure lead in the cheaper ones, then what are they using - recycled lead?

Pure lead makes a battery better for power and capacity. Many cost twice as much. Heavier battery weight is generally an indicator of a higher capacity. Bob

So the Sam’s Club Duracell 31 AGM has a reserve capacity of 200 minutes, 1,000 MCA and weighs 65 lbs. with 18 month warranty for $200
the Interstate 31 pure lead AGM has a reserve capacity of 200 minutes, 1,155 MCA and weighs 72 lbs. with a 3 yr warranty for $435.
the Odyssey 31 pure lead AGM has a reserve capacity of 200 minutes, 1,370 MCA and weighs 78 lbs with a 3 yr warranty for $562.

    Which is better?

Not saying the Duracell from Sams is better but I had 4 of them in my bay boat and used to use it about 3x a week. They were almost 5 years old when I sold the boat and were still running strong.

The Sam’s Duracell is no doubt a great value….especially if they last 4 years or more. Will be used for cranking my F300 and running a garmin 12” mfd and a pump and power pole. I just don’t see spending $500 for a battery with the same specs as the Duracell,,,,,unless the Duracell craps out shortly after warranty

It depends!……. I have the Odyssey($425), but it is not used for anything but starting and pumps.6 years and still going well. I think it is the only TPPL (thin plate pure lead) however if you are running multiple ff plus other stuff(ffs) The thin plate may not be as beneficial. Sams has a better reputation, but I am not sure it is the same quality manufacturer anymore. Interstate has a lesser rep but longer warrantee. JMO Bob

My interstate pure lead AGM is 4 years old. After charging and letting it rest for 3 days, it only shows 12.49 volts. I read where it should be 12.8 after a full charge and few days rest. Also that if it shows 12.49 - 12.52 that it only has about 70% of its original capacity. I’m gonna run it until it starts to really struggle to fire up my big motor…..I also have a run and gun 12v to 36v charger hooked up to the cranker and my 36v Impulse Lithium. If my lithium battery starts struggling to charge while underway then I think I will try the Duracell. Thanks everyone for their input, I really appreciate it.

Duracell AGM is made by East Penn (sold under many names….duracell, deka, intimidator, etc). My 31 Agm TM batts are 7 seasons old & my cranker is 4 seasons old and all are going strong. Will replace with the same when necessary.

Glad to hear the positive reviews of Sam’s Duracell. I have their wet cell 8 volt batteries in my 48v golf cart…..only going on year 3, but so far so good.

I run the Odyssey Extreme 31AGM and very happy with it. They are expensive and heavy, but no complaints
