Purchasing a boat with a new powerhead???

Looking at purchasing a used boat. If the powerhead has been replaced would that be a immediate red flag. Should it be avoided. Motor is a 2017 Pro XS, 450 hrs on original power head. 53hrs on new.

If done properly it's not a problem at all, still should be checked and inspected like any other used motor.
Could even be better than original ever was.

I would ask what caused the problem, requiring the power head to be replaced.
Did they identify and fix the root cause?

This would not be a problem because the only powerhead available is fully dressed.

I would want to confirm that the replacement powerhead actually is an OEM from Mercury and was installed by a good, certified Mercury shop. You should be able to track the engine's service history with Mercury via the engine serial number. If all the above is true, I wouldn't hesitate. If not, I'd probably keep looking. Good luck!!

you are not buying a new product so you cant expect perfection if you buy new your chances at problems are less but in all mechanical products there can be issues. in 2 stroke mercs with near 500 hrs the compressor is likley to fail so a new powerhead with new compressor would be a plus.

Treat it like another used boat purchase paying a little more attention to the motor. I.E. who did the service, what was the cause of the previous blowup and a couple reciepts.

Too many good used boats out there. I want one that is all original unless Don Weed did the work. I know the all-original one has no guarantee but to me, it ups the odds. Where did the power head come from...Mercury or Blackbird?

You need answers to a number of questions, most importantly where did the powerhead come from and who did the work. A powerhead usually fails for a reason and that reason is usually fuel/oil delivery. If powerhead was replaced for this reason, all injectors must be cleaned and calibrated. All this to say you need to ensure you know why the powerhead was replaced and that the cause was addressed. As the post above said, lots of used boats for sale so do your due diligence.

Not true at all. As others have said make sure it was done by a reputable shop and find out what caused the failure on the original powerhead.

Much cheaper to reinstall original components. Fully dressed powerhead is going to be hugely expensive.

Wrong Mercury does not sell a bare powerhead. They only sell a fully dressed powerhead all new components.

I wouldn't avoid it because of that. Maybe if it had just been replaced an not ran enough, but since it's got over 50 hours on it already with no problems it should be good.

True. The thread title said new powerhead, and it is for a Mercury motor. Can you buy a new Mercury powerhead from someone other than Mercury?
