It is possible as the rectifier has a separate circuit that takes one of the AC voltages from the stator and converts them into a square wave signal the feeds the tach.

How would I test to see if the rectifier is bad or going??? Every other time I had to replace the rectifier my tach never worked and that is how I knew the rectifier was bad.

Connect a clip-on ammeter to the positive battery cable. Run the battery down a bit using pumps and lights, trim, jackplate, etc. Then start the motor up and watch the charging amps on the ammeter at idle and at about 3000 rpm
