New Boat puller - 2023 Silverado 3.0 Duramax

A few months ago I traded in my 2017 F150 (3.5 eco boost) for a 2023 Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax. I really liked the Ford I had and was going to trade for another one till I did some research on this 3.0. The power and efficiency is absolutely ridiculous! I average about 18 towing my 21ft skeeter and been getting 30+ unloaded on the highway. I have put about 7k on this new one and am averaging 25.7 overall since I have owned it. If you put on a lot of miles there is quite a bit of savings overall with this engine. In most cases there is only about a $1k up-charge over the 5.3v8. When you go the 3.0 route, you also get a 100k powertrain warranty opposed to the 60k warranty you get with the gas options so in my opinion the upcharge for the engine is a wash. Below is a breakdown of the savings I calculated on fuel based on driving 25k per year compared to my last truck. These are current gas prices in my area.

    (2017 F150)
    25k per year, 17mpg average
    1,470.58 gal/yr
    87 octane - $3.89/gal
    $5720.58/yr

    (2023 Silverado 3.0)
    25k per year, 25.7mpg average
    972.76 gal/yr
    diesel - $3.99/gal
    $3881.32/yr

    Fuel savings = $1,839.26 savings per year = $9,196.30 over 5 years.

    Def costs ($3/gal) = 20 gallons per year = $60 per year = $300 over 5 years

Oil Change = $30 increase over gas x 3 oil changes per year = $90 per year increase = $450 over 5 years

Total savings with increased maintenance costs taken out = $1689.26/yr = $8446.30 over 5 years.

Awesome breakdown, I test drove the LM2 version of the 3.0 and was really impressed with the drivetrain, I am sold that it will be my next truck, Can't wait to try the LZ0 version of the 3.0!

My wife has a 22' Yukon with the 5.3 and the next one will have the 3.0.

The lowest regular here is 3.26 and lowest diesel is 3.99 or .73 cents difference. Using these numbers I come up with a 1,443.33 a year in fuel savings at 25 vs 15 MPG average driving 25,000 miles a year. If the 3.0 proves to be a reliable offering GM won't be able to make em fast enough to keep up.

    Congrats on the new ride!

What does the diesel truck cost compared to same truck with gas motor? If it costs me $6k more for the diesel it is closer to a wash.

It is cheaper to get the 3.0 diesel than the 6.2 gasser. a 1k upgrade over the 5.3 gas

It's calculated in there if you read the entire post. DEF is about $60/yr for me.

6.2 also requires premium fuel which is $0.70 cents per gallon more than diesel in my neck of the woods

Only a .10 difference on 87 vs diesel? Wow. Youre lucky there. Most of the country is .50-1$

Whats the payment difference though? Thats not calculated into this that I see. 100$/month payment increase literally offsets the "savings".

Not to start a giant debate...but I see guys justify diesel and the upgrades with the fuel savings. They fail to realize the upfront cost of all that takes 5+ years to recoup that money.

If you read his post, the increase to go from gas to diesel is 1k. That is recouped in 7-8 months in his example.

I was buying a new truck regardless if it was a gas or a diesel. As I previously stated, there is only a $1k increase in cost over the standard 5.3 V8. I was able to buy this truck cheaper than another F-150 with the 3.5 like I previously had. The national avg right now for 87 octane is $3.87 and Diesel is $4.34, so a $0.47 cent difference nationally.

Current vehicle payment....not a the other option. Increase in monthly cost is an increase regardless.

I can justify not buying either truck by saying he will save 6k a year (current truck paid off)
