    RV trip planning tools

These two tools make RV trip planning much easier, RV Trip Wizard & Garmin RV 895. If you are planning a long RV trip, I highly recommend those two items for your trip planning! Takes a bit to learn how to make them work together, but once learned, makes planning a breeze.

The Garmin RV is my next GPS upgrade, but hadn't heard about the RV Trip Wizard. Thanks for the recommendations!

We are planning a trip to Mt. Rushmore. RV Trip Wizard it worth its weight in gold! Plans your route given your RV specs. If you are or considering joining "Clubs", fantastic for reviewing camp grounds and contact information.

Take a couple of short trips to see how far you want to travel each day. Big difference pulling a trailer, than traveling in the car.
Our next trip has a couple of 400 mile legs.
We will see how that goes.

Wife and I try to keep our travel time under 4 hours each day. When you take tear down and setup time into account you can quickly hit an 8 hour day. Have done a couple 10+ hour days and they are rough. Remember that the rv is for relaxing, not for rushing.

When traveling. Don’t tear down or set up. Leave it hooked to truck if I’m only staying one night.

Yes, trips are meant to be relaxing and not rushing to the destination. We got a trailer that weighs under 4,000 fully loaded. I wanted to keep it about 1/2 of the trucks max towing capacity. We visit the Poconos at least three times a year. I do know when I-81 splits west from I-78, that the climb up Tremont is a long,,,,, steep ascent...

    I'll plan the route accordingly.

Just returned from our one month round trip to Mt. Rushmore.
Fifth wheel was a dream to pull with my F250. Fuel mileage sucked, 9 - 10 mpg.
Mississippi has the worst drivers and worst highways.
Garmin RV 895 gets "Hinky" when approaching the Camp Grounds. It does not like the "City Streets". Used the combination between the Garmin and Google Maps when getting off the highways.
    Zero issues with the Trailer.

For the most part we were well within the "Rules of 3" Had a couple exceptions.

This is some good info here! We have only done a couple really short weekends, but have reservations for West Glacier KOA in Montana next summer. Sounds like a Garmin RV 895 just got put on my X-mas list. Thanks!

Been planning rv trips for years with just a desk calendar and a phone.

We would travel well together! I like your rule.

When I told my wife I wanted to start staying an extra night every third day, she thought it was silly. Now it’s her rule. Three straight days of driving is draining, and a full day off is great.

Good tools, but I still start most days with a Motor Carrier’s Atlas, a cup of coffee and my iPad. I want to have the route in my head just in case what the GPS is telling me seems stupid. I use the iPad to check state DOT sites for major construction issues. Sometimes the long way is the fastest and least stressful.

I see people in campgrounds jump out of bed at some crazy early hour and get on the road. Life is too short to hurry. I know some people have limited vacation time, but I’ve seen retired folks in the same rush to go. Coffee in the morning, beer in the late afternoon, and dozing off while reading by a campfire is really a heck of a good life if you are lucky enough to be able to do it.

I agree on not rushing you to get to the next destination. I also like using the atlas and having an idea in my head.

Atlas is dated, Where RV Trip Wizard is up to date. Atlas does not show campgrounds w/link, RV Trip Wizard does.
I'll put using both the RV Trip Wizard with the GPS unit, will preform much better than using an Atlas, Desk Calendar, phone, ...
