Replacement Pull Up Cord/Cable for Minn Kota Fortrex Trolling Motor

Looking for recommendations/suggestions for replacing my broken pull-up cord on my Fortrex trolling motor that broke on me yesterday. Was thinking about getting a replacement cord or possibly replacing it with a nylon covered metal cable. Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

My rope broke last year on my Fortrex and used this. I cut the cord in half to use if needed. Also took the Minn Kota handle off and attached to a piece of paracord for a spare.

I bought the factory replacement cable last year when I was ordering s few other parts for my ultrex. I think it was 20 dollars or so . It has already shown some serious wear so I tried something different . I got some of the plastic coated stranded wire of the same size at rural king . It was maybe 3 bucks for 6 feet . I don't see how it won't work but only time will tell.

That's what I did. Got it from home depot. It lasts a long time. After a few years you just need to keep an eye on the cable where I comes out of the TM. The plastic coating wears through and the metal to metal rubbing wears the bushing out.

That's the route I took with my Maxxum in 2020 - STENS #6 (3/16") solid braid starter rope. Has 200 or so trip on it, and no signs of wear.

I've had the TH Marine G Force handle, mine eventually failed at the handle. I went with Bob's Big D Handle and found it to be far superior.

When the pull rope on my Fortrex started to fray, I replaced the rope with black 550 paracord (US made), also mounted heat shrink tubing at the wear point on the rope and also replaced the small OEM handle with a black Honda snowblower handle (comfortable and very durable) After 5 years, the rope/heat shrink still looks like new. I had extra rope, so I made a spare with the original handle and left it in the boat. Don't use the nylon covered metal cord, it will wear out the rope guide bushing on the mount.

If you have a crimping tool, you can make the G Force type for around $15. (Cost is handle mostly). You can get the same handle at Lowe’s , but as mentioned above, get a snow blower or snow mobile pull handle; you’ll be glad you did.

That is what I used to do but used the handle as noted in post #3. I would routinely change it though at the beginning of the season just to be safe. As noted, make sure to use the US made 550 paracord. The stuff made overseas is pure garbage and will break.

Swing by my work and I'll give you a piece of 100% #84 Braided black virgin nylon made in our factory in Portugal. I'll only give you a enough for one as it will last you about 20 years.

Bobs Big D handle. I had the TH Marine, as mentioned above the tiny Allen screws back out or cable coating cracks and they get loose. Oh what a feeling it is when you put a lil effort into raising the trolling motor and the handle comes off and the rod dodging begins….. PITA……

If the T/M parts are in good shape and the cable is routed correctly it will last a long, long time.

Replaced mine with the TH marine G Force before it ever hit the water. Had found one for 20 $ brand new but a couple years old and installed it. If the cable ever breaks I have plenty of coated cable from an old dog runner.
