I got passed by a Bass Cat

As the old saying goes, Ranger boats are known as "Lead Sleds" and my 520L boat is no different although I do have it propped right and my G-2 is a strong motor so I can hit 70MPH when trimmed out.

Saturday I was in a T and making a long run from the blast off of my number being called, cold clear morning with smooth water and I was flying (Flying being of course a relative term)

So here I am doing 69-70 as it would toggle between the two speeds but mind you I am FLAT OUT and a Jaguar pulls along side, almost like he wanted to have a conversation. As soon as we made eye contact I saw him smile and that boat with a 400 on the back just left me in the dust.

Now mind you anyone would expected him to be faster but the way he built the additional speed and pulled away was impressive and humbling at the same time !!

I used to fish club tournaments out of a Bass Tracker with a 90 HP. Another guy in the club had a 20’ Bullet with a 250 XB. That guy could start dead last and still be fishing on the other side of the lake by the time I made it from the boat ramp to the main lake…

I don’t get too hung up on speed these days, although it is nice to blast around the lake on one of the rare calm-ish days. That Jag/400 combo is a certified beast!

Was in a buddies Stroker at one of our weekday evening tournaments one time. This has been probably 15 years ago at least. This ole boy had a hopped up Yamaha on his Ranger. He was headed to the dam and so were we. We let him get half way there before we took off. Passed him doing 95 and change loaded to fish. That thing would flat scoot!

I have a jaguar with a 400. Where it really shines is when there is a 2 foot chop and the field has to run 25-35 and I can pas at 60 with barely any discomfort.

Way back when, I bought a handheld GPS when they first came out. That thing must have weighed 1000 pounds cause it sure slowed down a lot of boats it was in.

    Funny story
Good friend and I launched his Stroker with a 280 on it, fellow at ramp asks how fast it was. My friend said North of 60. I use the same saying now.

    So true.
The funny thing is I saw this boat during the pre-blast off period when everyone is floating around and talking and I thought wow, what a rig that is
To see that rig fly was a treat, lot's of lift and obviously lot's of speed. Back in the day I owned a Cougar with the infamous Mercury XB and in the right conditions I could bump 80, sometimes a few ticks more but that required your full attention and a skill that took a long time learning curve for me.

I have no way to know what that boat was capable of but he was letting it all hang out .

Those 250 XB engines were the most awesome mainline machines of their day.
